ABOUT THE JOB
As a Generative AI (GenAI) Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) at Google Cloud, you are an embedded builder who bridges the gap between frontier AI products and production-grade reality within customers. Unlike traditional advisory roles, you will function as an innovator-builder, moving beyond high-level architecture to code, debug, and jointly ship bespoke agentic solutions directly within the customer’s environment. This role is designed for high-agency engineers with a founder’s mindset. You will address blockers to production including solving the integration complexities, data readiness issues, and state-management issues that prevent AI from reaching enterprise-grade maturity. By embedding with strategic accounts, you will serve a dual purpose: providing white glove deployment of complex AI systems and acting as a critical feedback loop, transforming real-world field insights into Google Cloud’s future product roadmap. It's an exciting time to join Google Cloud’s Go-To-Market team, leading the AI revolution for businesses worldwide. You’ll excel by leveraging Google's brand credibility—a legacy built on inventing foundational technologies and proven at scale. We’ll provide you with the world's most advanced AI portfolio, including frontier Gemini models, and the complete Vertex AI platform, helping you to solve business problems. We’re a collaborative culture providing direct access to DeepMind's engineering and research minds, empowering you to solve customer challenges. Join us to be the catalyst for our mission, drive customer success, and define the new cloud era—the market is yours.

- Knowledge of Large Language Model (LLM) native metrics (e.g., tokens/sec, cost-per-request) and techniques for optimizing state management and granular tracing.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a developer for complex AI applications, transitioning from rapid prototypes to production-grade agentic workflows (e.g., multi-agent systems, MCP servers) that drive measurable Return on Investment (ROI).
- Architect and code the connective tissue between Google’s AI products and customer's live infrastructure, including APIs, legacy data silos, and security perimeters as part of an expert team.
- Build high-performance evaluation pipelines and observability frameworks to ensure agentic systems meet rigorous requirements for accuracy, safety, and latency.
- Identify repeatable field patterns and friction points in Google’s AI stack, converting them into reusable modules or formal product feature requests for the Engineering teams.
- Co-build with Customer Engineering teams to instill Google-grade development best practices, ensuring long-term project success and high end-user adoption.

Forward Deployed Software Engineer Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a forward deployed software engineer in Michigan?
Most forward deployed software engineers in Michigan enter the role through a computer science or software engineering degree followed by hands-on software development experience, typically in a product, consulting, or systems integration environment. Michigan has no state-issued license for this role. Employers in the Detroit and Ann Arbor markets strongly favor candidates who can demonstrate prior client-facing deployment experience, proficiency with enterprise platforms common in automotive or manufacturing tech, and the ability to work independently at customer sites.
How much do forward deployed software engineers make in Michigan?
Forward deployed software engineers in Michigan earn a median of about $125,570 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $78,930 for the lowest 10% to over $166,510 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire forward deployed software engineers in Michigan?
Employers hiring forward deployed software engineers in Michigan right now include Google, KLA, and RXO, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Michigan's concentration of automotive OEMs, defense contractors, and enterprise software clients means hiring activity tends to cluster around large systems integrators and technology vendors with long-term Michigan customer relationships.
Which Michigan cities have the most forward deployed software engineer jobs?
Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Southfield account for the largest share of forward deployed software engineer openings in Michigan. Detroit and its surrounding suburbs drive volume through the region's dense automotive and manufacturing technology sector, while Ann Arbor attracts openings tied to university-affiliated research, health technology, and early-stage enterprise software companies that need engineers who can work directly with clients on deployment.
Are there remote forward deployed software engineer jobs in Michigan?
Yes, but they're limited, because the role is defined by on-site client engagement and hands-on deployment rather than desk work. About 50% of forward deployed software engineer openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with most of those being hybrid arrangements where engineers are on-site during critical deployment phases. The portions most likely to be done remotely are pre-deployment configuration, documentation, and post-launch technical support.
How can I get hired as a forward deployed software engineer in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a software development or solutions engineer role at a Michigan-based technology company or systems integrator, then moving into a forward deployed position once you have client-facing experience. Large Michigan employers in automotive technology and defense contracting, including General Motors and Leidos, run new-graduate and associate engineering programs that can serve as a starting point. Building a portfolio that demonstrates you can configure and deploy real software, even through open-source projects or internships, strengthens an application significantly alongside a computer science or engineering degree.
Where can I find and apply to forward deployed software engineer jobs in Michigan?
You can find and apply to forward deployed software engineer jobs in Michigan on Migrate Mate, which lists current Michigan openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and preferred location within Michigan, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
