AI/ML Engineer / Forward Deployed Engineer – Healthcare
Location: Catonsville, Maryland
Employment Type: Full-time
Department: Engineering / AI
About the role
Trulogik builds AI systems that automate complex healthcare payer operations across claims, pharmacy, prior authorization, and related workflows. Forward Deployed Engineers sit at the intersection of engineering, AI, healthcare operations, and the customer. You will work directly with health plans to understand difficult operational problems, translate them into technical solutions, and get those solutions running successfully in production. There is no handoff between "customer problem" and "engineering problem." You will help figure out what needs to be built, build it with the broader Trulogik engineering team, validate it against real-world data and workflows, and help ensure it delivers measurable results. This is primarily an engineering role—not a consulting or project-management role.
- Own technical delivery for major healthcare payer customers, from problem definition through production deployment.
- Work directly with customer business, clinical, data, and technology teams to understand complex workflows and translate them into executable solutions.
- Build and integrate AI/ML solutions using LLMs, machine learning, rules, APIs, data pipelines, and healthcare data.
- Rapidly prototype solutions against real customer problems and then harden successful approaches for production.
- Diagnose problems across applications, models, data, infrastructure, and integrations rather than stopping at organizational boundaries.
- Evaluate AI output for accuracy, explainability, reliability, and operational usefulness.
- Become deeply familiar with claims and other payer workflows and use that knowledge to influence the product roadmap.
- Take ownership when something isn't working: understand the problem, find the right people or technology, and get it resolved.
What we look for
- You are a strong Software, Data, or ML Engineer with 3+ years of experience who has built and deployed real-world systems, not just prototypes.
- You are comfortable with Python and modern AI/ML technologies and can work across application, data, and model layers.
- You understand—or can quickly learn—health insurance workflows such as claims adjudication, payment integrity, utilization management, pharmacy, or prior authorization.
- You can take an ambiguous business problem and turn it into a concrete technical approach without needing a detailed specification.
- You are comfortable working directly with sophisticated enterprise customers and can explain technical decisions clearly.
- You learn unfamiliar systems quickly and are willing to go deep when debugging difficult problems.
- You care about whether what you build actually works in production and creates measurable customer value.
- Experience with healthcare payer data, claims, HIPAA-regulated environments, LLMs, ML systems, or enterprise integrations is highly valuable.
Trulogik is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer. Employment decisions are based on merit, qualifications, and business needs. We are committed to providing equal employment opportunities and a workplace free from discrimination or harassment, in compliance with applicable local and international laws.

Tips for Your Forward Deployed Software Engineer Job Search
Show deployment stories on your resume
Hiring managers want to see how you shipped code at customer sites, not just internal environments. Describe specific on-site implementations you owned end-to-end, naming the technical constraints you solved and the outcome for the customer.
Highlight your cross-functional communication skills
Forward deployed roles sit between engineering and the customer, so your resume needs evidence of translating technical work for non-engineers. Call out meetings led, docs written for customer teams, or incidents you resolved directly with end users.
Target openings that match your travel tolerance
Travel requirements vary widely, from occasional on-site visits to full-time customer travel. Filter for openings whose travel expectations match your situation before applying, and confirm the cadence during the screening call so there are no surprises.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists forward deployed software engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a working demo for technical rounds
Interviews often include a live debugging or integration exercise simulating a customer environment. Practice diagnosing unfamiliar codebases under time pressure, and be ready to explain your reasoning out loud as if teaching the customer's engineering team.
Negotiate relocation and travel compensation separately
Offer letters for these roles often bundle base pay and travel stipends in ways that obscure total value. In your negotiation, separate reimbursement rates, per diem structures, and home-office allowances from base salary before comparing offers.
Forward Deployed Software Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most forward deployed software engineers?
The companies hiring the most forward deployed software engineers right now include Databricks, Deloitte, and Boston Consulting, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Defense contractors and enterprise software companies tend to post the highest volume of these roles consistently.
How many forward deployed software engineer jobs are remote?
About 58% of forward deployed software engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of September 2026, though many listings with remote flexibility still require periodic on-site travel. Sub-areas like monitoring infrastructure, integration support, and documentation work tend to offer the most remote-friendly arrangements within these roles.
How do you become a forward deployed software engineer?
Start by building strong fundamentals in software development and gaining experience shipping production code in a collaborative environment. From there, seek roles or projects that involve direct customer interaction, on-site deployment, or technical support. Developing the ability to debug unfamiliar systems under pressure and communicate technical issues clearly to non-engineers are the two skills that most distinguish strong candidates in this career path.
Can you get a forward deployed software engineer job with little experience?
Yes, some companies hire entry-level candidates into forward deployed roles, particularly at enterprise software firms with structured onboarding programs. Your best angle is demonstrating customer-facing experience in any context, internships with client deliverables, open-source contributions, or technical support work. Strong communication skills and comfort with ambiguity carry more weight here than in purely internal engineering roles, which can offset a shorter technical resume.
What does the forward deployed software engineer interview process look like?
Most processes include a recruiter screen, a technical phone interview covering algorithms or systems design, and a final round that combines a live coding or debugging exercise with a behavioral component focused on customer scenarios. Some companies add a take-home project simulating a real integration problem. Interviewers pay close attention to how you explain your technical decisions out loud, since the role requires constant communication with customer teams.
Where can I find and apply to forward deployed software engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to forward deployed software engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your experience and travel preferences, then apply directly to each listing on the platform.
