Role Description:
ShipBob is a global logistics technology company powering e-commerce fulfillment for thousands of brands. Our People team manages the workforce infrastructure that keeps ShipBob running, and we're ready to fundamentally change how that infrastructure works.
We're hiring a Forward Deployed Engineer III (AI) embedded directly within the People team. This is not a traditional engineering role. It is a role for someone who knows enterprise HR systems from the inside, has built AI-assisted automations that run in production, and has the process instincts and data governance discipline to transform how an HR function operates, responsibly. This role reports to the Senior Director, Total Rewards & HR Systems.
You will spend your first 60 days listening, mapping, and diagnosing. Then you will build. You will own the full lifecycle of every automation, from workflow map to production deployment to handoff documentation, working closely with our Central Data team and Legal to ensure sensitive data is handled with the care it deserves. This role reports to the Senior Director, Total Rewards & HR Systems.
What you'll do:
- Employee lifecycle automation: new hires, role changes, terminations, transfers, and leave. Eliminate the manual coordination that currently runs on emails and spreadsheets by building automated task orchestration with SLAs, escalation paths, and audit-ready logs.
- Comp planning infrastructure hardening: access controls, versioning, approval workflows, and AI-assisted benchmarking across our SecureSheets environment.
- Build a unified People analytics layer connecting ADP Workforce Now, Greenhouse, and Lattice into a governed data model that gives People leaders real workforce intelligence.
- Performance and goals connectivity: build the data infrastructure that links performance data in Lattice to workforce decisions.
- Spend your first 60 days embedded across every People sub-function, listening, mapping, and building a prioritized automation backlog that you own and execute against.
- Establish logging, monitoring, and alerting infrastructure for all automations. Publish reusable modules to the Automation Hub.
- Document all production automations to handoff-ready standard. Ensure every automation touching sensitive data has Legal sign-off and complies with HIPAA and PII governance requirements.
- Additional duties and responsibilities as necessary.
What you'll bring to the table:
- 5-8 years working with enterprise HR systems (ADP, Workday, SuccessFactors, or equivalent) at an integration or implementation level, not just as an end user.
- Demonstrated experience building and deploying AI-assisted workflows in production. Not demos, not proofs of concept, but things that run.
- Sound API integration skills: you have built RESTful integrations from scratch, handled auth and error states, and built things that do not break silently.
- Real depth in access control design for sensitive data. Working knowledge of HIPAA requirements and hands-on experience implementing role-based access controls in systems handling PII.
- Process thinking: you can take an undocumented, messy workflow and produce a clean system flow that exposes every failure mode before you write a line of code.
- High agency. You do not need a fully scoped project list to operate. You find the work.
- Experience with Greenhouse ATS at an API or integration level, preferred.
- Background in comp planning tools or sales incentive software, preferred.
- Familiarity with iPaaS platforms (Workato, Zapier, Boomi) in addition to direct API work, preferred.
- Experience at a high-growth, operationally complex company (logistics, e-commerce, manufacturing), preferred.

Tips for Your Remote Forward Deployed Software Engineer Job Search
Apply early to remote roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists remote forward deployed software engineer openings from across the U.S. in one place. Search roles by fit, apply directly, and move before postings close. Remote roles with clear requirements fill faster than you'd expect.
Show async communication skills upfront
Remote forward deployed roles require you to coordinate with distributed clients and internal teams entirely through written channels. Include examples of written technical documentation, async handoff notes, or client-facing incident summaries in your application materials to prove you can operate this way.
Document deployment and integration work concretely
Remote employers can't watch you work, so your portfolio needs to do it for them. Capture integration projects, client environment setups, and production deployments with measurable outcomes. A GitHub repo or case study that shows a real deployment lifecycle is more persuasive than a job title alone.
Prepare for remote-first technical interviews
Remote forward deployed interviews typically include async take-home exercises and live debugging sessions conducted over video with screen sharing. Practice articulating your thought process out loud while coding, because remote interviewers weight communication during technical problems as heavily as the solution itself.
Signal self-direction in every application touchpoint
Remote employers hiring forward deployed engineers want evidence you own problems end to end without supervision. Reference specific moments where you diagnosed a client-side issue, made a judgment call independently, and delivered a resolution. Cover letters and recruiter screens are both opportunities to make this concrete.
Remote Forward Deployed Software Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote forward deployed software engineer job?
Target remote-first companies and distributed engineering teams that embed engineers in client environments without requiring on-site presence, which is most common in enterprise software, defense tech, and AI infrastructure. Remote employers screen hard for self-direction, clear async written communication, and the ability to troubleshoot independently in customer-facing situations. A portfolio showing real deployment work, integration projects, or client-side problem solving gives you a concrete edge over candidates with equivalent credentials.
Which companies hire remote forward deployed software engineers?
Companies hiring remote forward deployed software engineers right now include Okta, GitLab, and Cresta, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Remote-first firms and distributed teams across enterprise software, defense tech, and AI infrastructure are the most consistent employers of this role.
Can you get a remote forward deployed software engineer job with no experience?
Yes, but remote entry-level roles are harder to land because you must operate independently from day one without the informal support of an office. Companies most likely to hire entry-level remote candidates are smaller remote-first startups that value raw technical ability. Demonstrating async communication skills, open-source contributions, or documented integration projects can substitute for formal experience and opens doors that a blank resume alone would not.
Do you need a degree for remote forward deployed software engineer jobs?
Not always. Remote employers for this role weigh demonstrated technical ability, client-facing communication skills, and a history of shipping real solutions more heavily than a diploma. Candidates who can show documented deployment work, integrations, or customer-environment problem solving often advance past degree requirements, particularly at remote-first firms that evaluate engineers on output rather than credentials.
Which industries hire the most remote forward deployed software engineers?
The sectors hiring the most remote forward deployed software engineers are Technology & Software, Consulting & Professional Services, and Non-Profit & Social Services, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. These sectors rely on distributed teams that embed engineers in customer environments without requiring engineers to relocate.
