Verify your degree aligns with PERM requirements
PERM labor certifications for M&A roles specify an exact degree field. A finance or economics degree maps cleanly, but a general business degree sometimes triggers DOL audits. Confirm your credential matches the job description's stated educational requirement before applying.
Target investment banks with established immigration programs
Bulge-bracket and middle-market investment banks sponsor green cards far more consistently than boutique advisory firms. Look for employers who have filed EB-2 or EB-3 I-140 petitions in recent years, since an active immigration program signals the infrastructure to carry your case through a multi-year PERM process.
Search green card sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter M&A and financial advisory roles by employers with verified green card sponsorship history. This cuts the search time significantly and surfaces positions where PERM filing is a realistic outcome, not just an informal promise during the offer stage.
Negotiate green card sponsorship into your offer letter
Ask for green card sponsorship to be written into your employment agreement before signing, specifying EB-2 or EB-3 and the employer's timeline commitment. Verbal assurances carry no weight once you're on the job, and M&A teams with high turnover sometimes deprioritize immigration filing for newer analysts.
Understand how PERM wage levels affect your offer
DOL requires employers to pay you the prevailing wage for your M&A role throughout the PERM process. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level for your job title and location before negotiations, so you can verify your offered compensation meets DOL's threshold and won't cause a filing delay.
Build an EB-2 credentials file before your job search
EB-2 requires evidence of an advanced degree or its equivalent. Gather transcripts, any graduate coursework, professional certifications such as CFA or FINRA licensing, and performance reviews that document your specialized M&A expertise before approaching employers, so sponsorship conversations move faster.
Green Card Mergers And Acquisitions: Frequently Asked Questions
Do M&A roles typically qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most M&A analyst and associate positions qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers, since they require at least a bachelor's degree. Roles demanding a master's degree or equivalent experience in financial modeling, due diligence, or valuation can qualify under EB-2. The employer's job description and the prevailing wage determination submitted to DOL will define which category applies to your specific position.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for M&A professionals?
H-1B visa status is temporary, capped at 65,000 slots annually, and subject to a lottery. EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship has no annual cap at the petition level, grants permanent residency rather than a temporary work authorization, and doesn't depend on lottery luck. The trade-off is time: PERM labor certification alone can take 12 to 18 months before USCIS even reviews your I-140 petition.
What does the PERM process look like for an M&A job?
Your employer files a PERM labor certification with DOL to demonstrate that no qualified U.S. worker is available for your role. This involves posting the job, conducting a formal recruitment campaign, and documenting the results. For M&A positions, the recruitment must reflect the actual specialized requirements of the role, such as financial modeling or transaction advisory experience, not a generic finance job description.
How can I find M&A employers who actively sponsor green cards?
Search Migrate Mate to identify M&A and investment banking employers with a documented green card sponsorship history. Many firms sponsor visas opportunistically but lack the institutional process for full PERM-to-green-card cases, so filtering by employers with prior EB-2 or EB-3 filings helps you avoid companies where sponsorship is technically possible but rarely executed in practice.
Can I switch M&A employers while my green card is pending?
Changing employers while your PERM is pending typically restarts the process, since the PERM certification is tied to the sponsoring employer and the specific job description. Once your I-140 is approved and your priority date becomes current, portability rules allow you to change to a similar role without losing your place in the visa queue, provided your adjustment of status application has been pending for at least 180 days.
