Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship in Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Document your research contributions before applying
Compile published papers, citations, grants, and conference presentations into a single credential file before you start applying. PERM filings for postdoctoral roles require detailed documentation of duties and qualifications, and having this ready accelerates your employer's labor certification submission.
Target research institutions with established PERM history
Universities and federal research labs that regularly sponsor international postdocs have dedicated HR and immigration teams who understand the PERM timeline. Applying to institutions without that infrastructure often means starting from scratch, which can delay your I-140 filing by months.
Understand how your degree level shapes your EB category
A Ph.D. typically supports an EB-2 filing, while a master's degree without substantial specialized experience usually falls under EB-3. Your category affects priority date wait times, particularly if your country of birth is subject to per-country backlogs.
Use Migrate Mate to find postdoc employers with green card filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter postdoctoral research fellow roles by employers with documented EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship activity. This narrows your list to institutions that have already committed to the PERM process rather than those who may agree in principle.
Verify the prevailing wage tier before your employer files
DOL requires your offered salary to meet the prevailing wage for your occupation and work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search before your employer submits the PERM application to confirm the offered compensation clears the required wage level and avoids a DOL audit.

Find Postdoctoral Research Fellow JobsPostdoctoral Research Fellow Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does my postdoctoral role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most postdoctoral research fellow positions qualify for EB-2 sponsorship because the role requires an advanced degree, typically a Ph.D. in a relevant scientific or technical field. If your background is a master's degree with significant specialized research experience, your employer may alternatively pursue an EB-3 professional filing. Your supervising institution's immigration team will evaluate which category fits your credentials and the specific duties of the position.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for postdoctoral researchers?
H-1B sponsorship is temporary and subject to annual lottery caps, while EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM leads to permanent residency with no annual cap at the petition level. The PERM process is longer, often taking one to three years from labor certification to I-485 approval, but it doesn't require you to win a lottery or re-file every few years. Many postdocs pursue both in parallel, using H-1B status while the green card case progresses.
What does the PERM labor certification process involve for postdoc employers?
PERM requires your employer to demonstrate to DOL that no qualified U.S. worker is available for the position by completing a regulated recruitment process, including job postings and advertisements. The employer then submits an ETA Form 9089 to DOL for certification. Once certified, they file the I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS on your behalf. The entire process is employer-driven, but you should confirm your institution has legal counsel experienced with research-sector PERM filings.
How can I find postdoctoral research fellow positions where employers actively sponsor green cards?
Migrate Mate lets you search postdoctoral roles filtered by employers with confirmed EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship activity, which cuts through the guesswork of cold-applying to institutions that may not sponsor. Many universities list postdoc openings without specifying immigration support, so filtering by sponsorship history upfront saves significant time and avoids late-stage offer complications.
Does my country of birth affect my green card timeline as a postdoctoral researcher?
Yes. If you were born in a country with high demand for employment-based green cards, such as India or China, your priority date may be subject to a backlog that adds years to your wait even after I-140 approval. Nationals from most other countries face no significant wait at the EB-2 or EB-3 level. The Visa Bulletin published monthly by the State Department tracks current priority dates, and your employer's immigration attorney can project your estimated timeline based on your specific situation.
