At Schwab, you’re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us challenge the status quo and transform the finance industry together. We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location(s).
The Treasury Analytics & Reporting team plays a critical role in advancing how Corporate Treasury operates—delivering scalable analytics, modern reporting, and automation that drives better decision-making across the balance sheet. As a Senior Specialist, you will act as a builder and problem-solver, translating complex business needs into practical, high-impact solutions. Align your degree to the role
USCIS scrutinizes whether your specific degree field matches the job duties. A computer science or information systems degree maps cleanly to AI Data Engineer; a general business or unrelated STEM degree may trigger an RFE even when your skills are strong.
Use OFLC Wage Search before negotiating
Your employer must pay the DOL prevailing wage for your exact SOC code and work location. Pull the OFLC Wage Search figures for your metro area before you negotiate so your offer clears Level I or Level II minimums and avoids an LCA rejection.
Target employers with cap-exempt filing history
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated entities can file H-1B petitions year-round without entering the lottery. If you're open to applied research or academic data roles, these organizations let you start without waiting for April registration.
Search verified sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter your AI Data Engineer job search on Migrate Mate to see employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history for data engineering roles, so you're applying to companies that have already demonstrated willingness and capacity to sponsor.
Clarify cloud infrastructure duties in your offer letter
AI Data Engineer job descriptions that mix data pipeline work with general IT support can weaken the specialty occupation argument. Ask your employer to draft your offer letter with specific references to ML pipeline architecture, distributed systems, or model deployment rather than broad IT maintenance language.
File for premium processing if your start date is tight
USCIS premium processing guarantees a decision within 15 business days. If your current OPT or grace period is expiring close to October 1, confirm with your employer whether they'll cover the fee to avoid a gap in authorized work status.
H-1B Visa AI Data Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an AI Data Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the job duties require at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as computer science, data engineering, or a related quantitative discipline. USCIS evaluates the specific duties listed in the job description and the LCA, not just the job title. Roles that mix AI pipeline work with general IT support can face scrutiny, so the job description should clearly tie duties to a specialized body of theoretical and practical knowledge.
Which employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for AI Data Engineers?
Technology companies, financial services firms, healthcare analytics organizations, and large retail or logistics companies with in-house data platforms are consistent H-1B sponsors for AI Data Engineer roles. You can identify employers with confirmed LCA filing history for these roles on Migrate Mate, which filters for employers that have already filed for comparable positions rather than those that simply post open roles.
What SOC code is typically used for AI Data Engineer H-1B petitions?
Most employers file AI Data Engineer petitions under SOC 15-1242 (Database Architects) or 15-2051 (Data Scientists), depending on whether the role emphasizes infrastructure and pipeline design or modeling and analysis. The SOC code your employer selects affects the DOL prevailing wage level on the LCA, so it's worth reviewing the O*NET occupation profile for both codes to confirm which aligns with your actual job duties before the LCA is filed.
Can I change employers mid-year as an H-1B AI Data Engineer?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer as soon as the new I-129 petition is filed, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you've been in valid H-1B status. Your new employer files a fresh I-129 with a new LCA certified for the new position and worksite. There's no need to wait for approval before starting, but both the LCA certification and petition filing must occur before your last day at the previous employer.
What happens if my H-1B lottery registration isn't selected as an AI Data Engineer?
If you're not selected in the annual H-1B lottery, you have several paths depending on your current status. Employers that qualify as cap-exempt, including universities and affiliated nonprofit research entities, can file outside the lottery. You may also explore O-1A classification if your work in AI or data engineering includes published research, patents, or recognized contributions. Some professionals extend OPT or change to another nonimmigrant status while waiting for the next registration window in March.
