Align your degree to your specialization
USCIS scrutinizes whether your specific degree field matches your product development role. A mechanical engineering degree supporting a hardware-focused position is clean. A business degree for the same role invites an RFE. Document the technical overlap explicitly before you apply.
Use OFLC Wage Search before negotiating
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and location. Pull the OFLC Wage Search figures yourself so you enter salary conversations knowing the legal floor, not just market benchmarks.
Search Migrate Mate for LCA-verified employers
Filter by product development roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have active H-1B LCA filing history. This cuts your list to companies with a documented record of sponsoring your specific occupation, not just general engineering roles.
Target cap-exempt employers in your sector
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and certain government-affiliated labs are exempt from the H-1B lottery cap. Product development roles exist at these organizations in biomedical, energy, and defense research. Pursuing a cap-exempt offer eliminates lottery risk entirely.
Request premium processing before your start date
Standard I-129 adjudication can run several months. If your offer has a firm start date tied to a product launch cycle, ask your employer to file with USCIS premium processing to get a decision within 15 business days and protect your timeline.
Review your O*NET profile before the interview
The O*NET occupation profile for product development engineers lists the core tasks and knowledge areas USCIS uses to evaluate specialty occupation status. Framing your experience in those terms during interviews helps the employer's attorney build a stronger petition.
H-1B Visa Product Development Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Development Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS evaluates whether the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field. Product development engineering roles grounded in mechanical, electrical, biomedical, or industrial engineering consistently meet this standard. Roles with vague duty descriptions or a mix of non-technical responsibilities can draw RFEs, so the job description precision matters as much as the title itself.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for Product Development Engineers?
Medical device manufacturers, semiconductor and electronics companies, automotive suppliers, and industrial equipment firms file LCAs for product development engineering roles at high volume. Defense contractors and aerospace companies also sponsor regularly, though some require security clearance eligibility. You can see which specific employers have active filing history for this occupation on Migrate Mate before targeting your applications.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I change product development roles mid-visa?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new I-129 petition, provided your original petition was approved and you've maintained valid status. The new employer must file their own LCA for your new role and location. If the product scope or SOC code changes significantly, the new petition is evaluated on its own merits.
How does the H-1B lottery affect my timeline for starting a Product Development Engineer role?
Cap-subject H-1B petitions must be filed in April for an October 1 start date. USCIS selects registrations by lottery in March, and only selected registrants can file petitions. If you're not selected, you'd need to wait for the next lottery cycle, pursue a cap-exempt employer, or explore bridge visas like OPT extension if you're on F-1 status. Planning your job search around the lottery window is essential.
What documentation strengthens an H-1B petition for a Product Development Engineer?
A detailed job description that maps specific duties to engineering degree requirements is the foundation. Supporting materials include your official transcripts, any professional engineering licenses, patents you've contributed to, and a clear explanation of the product systems you'll work on. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator helps USCIS confirm the equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's degree in the relevant field.
