H-1B Visa Rehabilitation Psychologist Jobs
Rehabilitation Psychologists qualify for H-1B sponsorship because the role meets USCIS specialty occupation requirements: a directly related master's or doctoral degree in psychology is standard. Hospital systems, inpatient rehab facilities, and VA-affiliated employers are among the most active sponsors for this licensure-heavy clinical specialty.

Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires a directly related degree for specialty occupation status. A general psychology bachelor's won't suffice. Confirm your graduate degree field aligns with rehabilitation psychology before applying, since mismatches trigger Requests for Evidence.
Check prevailing wage before salary talks
Run your target job title and location through OFLC Wage Search before any offer discussion. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing rate, and underbidding that threshold stalls certification.
Target inpatient rehab and VA-affiliated employers
Hospital-based rehab units and VA medical centers file H-1B petitions more consistently than private outpatient clinics. Prioritize employers with existing H-1B filing history in clinical psychology roles to avoid sponsorship negotiations from scratch.
Search H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter by rehabilitation psychology and clinical roles on Migrate Mate to surface employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history. This cuts the research step of identifying which facilities have actually sponsored psychologists before.
Get your state license process started early
Most states require licensure before you can practice independently, and H-1B approval doesn't substitute for it. Start the psychology licensure application in your target state before your offer letter is finalized so the employer's petition timeline isn't held up.
Clarify cap-exempt status with your employer
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government entities affiliated with higher education are cap-exempt under USCIS rules, meaning no lottery and no April filing deadline. If your employer qualifies, you can file any time of year.

Find Rehabilitation Psychologist JobsRehabilitation Psychologist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Rehabilitation Psychologist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. USCIS classifies rehabilitation psychology as a specialty occupation because the role normally requires at least a master's degree in psychology or a directly related field. Employers document this in the I-129 petition. Roles that blend psychology with general counseling duties can attract RFEs, so the job description should clearly reflect the specialized clinical scope.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Rehabilitation Psychologists?
Hospital systems with inpatient rehabilitation units, VA medical centers, academic medical centers, and federally funded research institutions are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for this role. Outpatient private practices rarely sponsor because of cost and administrative capacity. You can browse employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history for psychology roles on Migrate Mate.
Does state licensure affect the H-1B petition for a Rehabilitation Psychologist?
It can. USCIS may request evidence that you're eligible for licensure in the state where you'll practice, even if the license itself isn't yet issued at the time of filing. Some employers include a conditional offer tied to licensure completion. Starting the state board application before your petition is submitted reduces delays and strengthens the petition package.
Can I switch from F-1 OPT to H-1B as a Rehabilitation Psychologist?
Yes, and if your role qualifies for STEM OPT extension under a STEM-designated degree program, you may be able to extend your OPT authorization while waiting for H-1B cap selection and the October 1 start date. USCIS requires your employer to file before the April cap deadline. Confirm your degree's STEM designation with your DSO before relying on that timeline.
What does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement mean for Rehabilitation Psychologist roles?
Before USCIS approves the petition, DOL must certify the LCA, which confirms your offered wage meets the prevailing wage for your job title and work location. The wage floor is set by the O*NET occupation code and local wage data. Employers who underpay relative to DOL's wage levels will have the LCA rejected, blocking the petition from moving forward.
