Participation in focused quality or research projects is encouraged. Active involvement in APP student teaching through affiliated programs is one of the required core values.
Multiple opportunities exist within our program for specialty interests. We participate in multi-specialty care teams, including Neuromuscular, Headache, Movement Disorder, Neuro-Oncology, Epilepsy, Concussion, and a Ketogenic Diet program.
Our clinical staff includes 24 physicians, 5 Nurse Practitioners, 2 Dietitians, an Epilepsy Nurse Specialty Care Coordinator, nurses, and medical assistants. The Neurology Division covers five satellite clinics (i.e., Arrowhead, Southwest Valley, Mercy Gilbert, Scottsdale, Northwest Valley), as well as the inpatient neurology services on main campus at Phoenix Children’s. In 2024, we will expand inpatient coverage to Phoenix Children’s Arrowhead to meet the needs of our growing population in the West Valley and to Phoenix Children’s Mercy Gilbert Hospital to meet the needs of our growing population in the East Valley.

Verify your NP credentials meet specialty occupation
H-1B approval for PNP roles hinges on proving a master's degree is the minimum entry requirement. Pull the O*NET profile for Nurse Practitioners and confirm your MSN or DNP aligns with the specialty occupation standard USCIS uses.
Target children's hospitals with LCA filing history
Freestanding children's hospitals and pediatric units within large health systems file LCAs routinely and have established immigration workflows. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified H-1B pediatric nursing filing history before applying.
Confirm state licensure transfers before your start date
Your H-1B is tied to a specific employer and state. If you're licensed in one state but the role is in another, you must hold an active license in that state before USCIS approves the petition. Compact Nurse Licensure doesn't automatically cover all NP practice agreements.
Ask employers about premium processing upfront
Pediatric NP hiring often has credentialing lead times of 60 to 90 days. If your employer won't use premium processing, your H-1B could still be in adjudication when your start date arrives. Clarify the employer's standard timeline during the offer negotiation.
Check prevailing wage before signing an offer
The DOL requires employers to pay the prevailing wage for your specific SOC code and geographic location. Run your role through the OFLC Wage Search to confirm the offered wage meets at least Level I before you accept, so the LCA isn't filed below compliance.
Document clinical subspecialty for RFE prevention
USCIS occasionally issues RFEs questioning whether PNP roles require a degree in a specific specialty. Gather evidence that your position specifies pediatric-focused training, such as job postings requiring a PNP certificate, to preemptively support the employer's H-1B petition.
H-1B Visa Pediatric Nurse Practitioner: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Pediatric Nurse Practitioner roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations?
Yes. USCIS recognizes Pediatric Nurse Practitioner positions as specialty occupations because they typically require a minimum of a master's degree in nursing with a pediatric focus. You'll need an MSN or DNP, a national NP certification in pediatrics or pediatric acute care, and an active state advanced practice license for the state where you'll work.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Pediatric Nurse Practitioners?
Freestanding children's hospitals, academic medical centers with dedicated pediatric programs, and large multi-specialty pediatric group practices are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for PNP roles. These employers file LCAs with DOL regularly and have legal teams experienced with nursing specialty occupation petitions. You can search for employers with verified filing history on Migrate Mate.
Is state NP licensure required before the H-1B is filed?
USCIS requires that you hold or be eligible for the appropriate state NP license before the petition is approved, and you must be fully licensed before you begin practicing. If you're relocating from another state, confirm whether your state's NP compact agreement covers advanced practice or only registered nursing, since the distinction affects your licensing timeline.
How does the H-1B cap lottery affect PNP hiring timelines?
Most Pediatric Nurse Practitioner roles at private hospitals and group practices are subject to the annual H-1B cap and lottery, which runs in March for an October 1 start. However, positions at nonprofit hospitals or hospitals affiliated with universities may qualify for cap-exempt status, allowing filing at any time without lottery selection. Confirm cap-exempt eligibility with your prospective employer before accepting an offer.
Can an H-1B petition be filed if my NP certification is in a related but not identical subspecialty?
It depends on how closely the certification matches the role. USCIS evaluates whether your degree and certification field directly relate to the specific position. A Pediatric Nurse Practitioner job requiring pediatric acute care experience is more defensible with a CPNP-AC than a general FNP certification. Employers should document in the petition why your specific credentials satisfy the role's requirements to reduce RFE risk.
