Description and Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
- Input Models: Pioneer the interaction models for how humans converse, gesture, gaze, touch, and command our ambient AI ecosystem.
- Modality Transitions: Design natural handoffs between inputs—such as transitioning effortlessly from a voice command to spatial touch or subtle gaze selection.
- Intent & Disambiguation: Architect system behaviors for handling ambiguous AI inputs, fuzzy voice commands, and multi-threaded user intent.
- Interaction Prototyping: Build dynamic interaction simulations that test the responsiveness, latency tolerances, and feedback loops of non-traditional inputs.
- Sensor-Driven UX Architecture: Translate hardware sensor capabilities (cameras, microphones, spatial arrays) into intuitive, human-centered interaction guidelines.
Basic Qualifications:
- 8+ years in UX design, interaction design, or HCI research with a heavy focus on input mechanics.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in HCI, Cognitive Science, Interaction Design, Computer Science, or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Behavioral Background: You deeply understand human ergonomics, cognitive load, and natural communication habits, applying them to human-machine interaction.
- Empathetic Prototyper: You excel at mocking up invisible interactions, making abstract triggers concrete for user testing and stakeholder review.
- Technical Bridge: You are equally comfortable discussing hardware sensor constraints with engineers and human-centered workflows with designers.
- Systems Thinker: You are comfortable mapping complex decision trees, fallback states, and conversation design logic for nonlinear user journeys.
- Multimodal Fluency: You have hands-on experience designing across voice, spatial/gesture, gaze, and tactile input modalities, knowing the strengths and failure modes of each.
- Robust portfolio demonstrating end-to-end design of non-traditional input systems (voice, spatial, gesture, or multi-modal).
- Proven record of user testing and validating complex input behavioral models.
- Deep familiarity with hardware sensor ecosystems and software interaction loops.
- Background in Conversational Design (VUI), linguistics, or cognitive science.
- Deep understanding of human-computer interaction (HCI) methodologies.
- Prototyping experience using Unity, Unreal, or specialized physical computing environments.
- Experience with spatial computing platforms (VisionOS, Meta Quest, HoloLens).

Verify your degree maps to the role
USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation claims for design roles. A degree in graphic design, HCI, or interaction design supports the petition most cleanly. A business or unrelated degree requires documented equivalency through experience evaluations before your employer files.
Target employers with cap-exempt status
Universities, university-affiliated nonprofits, and government research organizations are cap-exempt, meaning your H-1B can start any time without waiting for October 1. UX roles at these institutions are common and bypass the lottery entirely.
Search H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter for employers with verified LCA filing history in design and product roles. This shows which companies have sponsored H-1B workers in comparable positions, so you're targeting employers who've already navigated the process.
Request the prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Look up your SOC code under the OFLC Wage Search before salary discussions. Your employer's LCA must certify at least the prevailing wage for your location and level, so knowing the DOL wage tiers gives you a factual floor in negotiations.
Portfolio presentation affects specialty occupation documentation
When your employer files the I-129, the petition must show the role requires a specific degree, not just creative skill. Frame your portfolio around systems-level thinking, design architecture, and cross-functional deliverables rather than visual output alone.
Use O*NET to strengthen the job description
The O*NET occupation profile for UX designers lists the education and knowledge requirements USCIS references when evaluating specialty occupation. Ask your employer's attorney to align the job description language with O*NET criteria before filing.
H-1B Visa Senior UX UI Designer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior UX UI Designer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as interaction design, human-computer interaction, or cognitive science. USCIS will reject petitions where the job description accepts any bachelor's degree regardless of field, so your employer's job posting and I-129 documentation must specify the required discipline clearly.
How do I find employers actively sponsoring H-1B visas for UX and UI design roles?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified LCA filing history, so you can see which employers have sponsored H-1B workers in design and product roles rather than guessing from job descriptions. Companies that have filed LCAs for UX titles are far more likely to repeat the process for a new hire than those with no filing history.
Can my employer file an H-1B for a fully remote Senior UX UI Designer position?
Yes, but the LCA must list every location where you'll work for more than 30 consecutive days. If you're remote and may work from multiple states, your employer may need to file multiple LCAs or amend the petition if your work location changes significantly after approval. USCIS has issued guidance on worksite requirements that your employer's attorney should review before filing.
What happens to my H-1B status if I'm laid off while working as a Senior UX UI Designer?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to find a new sponsoring employer, file for a change of status, or depart the U.S. During this window, a new employer can file an H-1B transfer petition and you can begin work once it's filed, not waiting for approval. Acting quickly matters because the 60-day clock doesn't pause.
Does H-1B sponsorship for UX UI roles differ between startups and large tech companies?
The USCIS filing process is identical, but the risk profile differs. Startups may face additional scrutiny on their ability to pay the prevailing wage, particularly if they're pre-revenue or recently funded. Large employers with established immigration programs typically have in-house counsel and streamlined LCA processes. Either way, the specialty occupation standard and prevailing wage requirement apply equally regardless of employer size.
