Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Mechanic
Verify your mechanic role qualifies
Check O*NET to confirm your specific mechanic specialty falls under a theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge. Some general repair roles don't meet the H-1B1 visa specialty occupation threshold, so match your job duties precisely before targeting employers.
Search H-1B1 sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter for employers with H-1B1 Singapore filing history using Migrate Mate. This surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data by occupation code, so you're targeting companies that have already navigated the sponsorship process for mechanics specifically.
Get your Singapore credentials evaluated early
U.S. employers need a credential evaluation confirming your polytechnic diploma or ITE certification meets a bachelor's-level equivalency. Arrange this through a NACES-member evaluator before applying, since delays here can stall your LCA filing timeline.
Understand the LCA prevailing wage requirement
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application certifying your offered wage meets DOL prevailing wage levels for your mechanic specialty and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the wage level for your exact SOC code before negotiating your offer.
Target employers already enrolled in E-Verify
Ask during the offer stage whether the employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Many H-1B1 visa sponsors are already compliant, but confirming this before you reach the consulate step avoids a situation where the employer must scramble to meet federal contractor or state mandates mid-process.
Prepare for consulate-stage specialty occupation questions
Unlike H-1B visa, your H-1B1 visa application is adjudicated at the U.S. consulate in Singapore, not by USCIS. Bring documentation showing your mechanic role requires specialized theoretical knowledge, such as your employer's job description and your degree or certification transcripts, to address any officer questions directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a mechanic role qualify for H-1B1 Singapore visa sponsorship?
It depends on your specialty. General automotive repair roles often don't satisfy the specialty occupation requirement, which demands a position requiring highly specialized theoretical and practical knowledge. Roles like avionics mechanic, industrial maintenance engineer, or mechatronics specialist have a stronger qualifying case. Verify your SOC code against O*NET job zone classifications before pursuing sponsorship.
How does H-1B1 Singapore differ from H-1B for mechanics?
H-1B1 Singapore has no lottery, the annual cap of 5,400 is rarely reached, and your application is filed directly at the U.S. consulate in Singapore rather than through USCIS. H-1B requires employer sponsorship through USCIS, is subject to an oversubscribed lottery, and has a higher per-petition cost. For Singaporean mechanics with a qualifying role, H-1B1 is the faster and more predictable path.
How do I find employers who sponsor H-1B1 Singapore visas for mechanic jobs?
Migrate Mate lets you filter job listings by H-1B1 Singapore visa sponsorship history using DOL Labor Condition Application data, so you can identify which employers have filed for mechanic roles specifically. This is more reliable than cold-applying and hoping an employer knows the H-1B1 process, which many HR teams confuse with the standard H-1B.
Can my employer file the H-1B1 petition without a U.S. immigration attorney?
The H-1B1 visa process is simpler than H-1B because it bypasses USCIS petition filing, but your employer still needs to complete the DOL Labor Condition Application and prepare the consulate package correctly. Smaller employers unfamiliar with the process sometimes make errors in the LCA wage level or specialty occupation documentation that delay or derail your application.
What happens to my H-1B1 status if I change mechanic employers in the U.S.?
H-1B1 status is employer-specific, so changing jobs requires your new employer to file a fresh Labor Condition Application and you to obtain a new H-1B1 visa stamp at a U.S. consulate before starting work. There is no H-1B1 portability provision equivalent to what H-1B holders have under AC21, so plan your transition timeline carefully with both employers to avoid a status gap.
