Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Construction Jobs
Verify your role qualifies as specialty occupation
Construction roles that require a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, architecture, or construction management qualify. General superintendent or laborer positions typically don't. Check your target job title against the O*NET occupation profile to confirm the degree requirement before applying.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to identify construction companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for H-1B1 visa or H-1B visa roles. Employers already familiar with the LCA process move faster and are less likely to stall on sponsorship paperwork once you have an offer.
Gather Singapore-specific credential documentation early
U.S. consular officers will review your academic transcripts and professional certifications. If your degree is from NUS, NTU, or SIT, prepare an official transcript and, where relevant, a credential evaluation confirming U.S. bachelor's equivalency before your interview appointment.
Confirm your employer will certify the LCA before signing
The DOL must certify the Labor Condition Application before you can apply for the H-1B1 at the consulate. Ask your employer explicitly whether they've filed an LCA before and confirm they'll use OFLC Wage Search to meet the prevailing wage requirement for your specific role and work location.
Apply at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore, not stateside
H-1B1 Singapore visa applications are filed consularly, not through USCIS. Once your employer's LCA is certified, you schedule a nonimmigrant visa interview at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore and bring the certified LCA, your DS-160, and your job offer letter.
Plan renewals before your two-year period ends
H-1B1 is issued in two-year increments with no built-in grace period for renewals. Construction projects often run long, so confirm with your employer at least four months before expiry that they'll file a new LCA and support your next consular renewal appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do construction project manager roles qualify for the H-1B1 Singapore visa?
Yes, construction project manager roles typically qualify when the position requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field. General foreman or on-site labor roles do not qualify because they don't require a specialty degree. Structural engineering, quantity surveying, and BIM coordination roles are also strong fits for H-1B1 eligibility.
How does the H-1B1 Singapore visa differ from the H-1B for construction professionals?
The H-1B1 Singapore visa skips the H-1B lottery entirely and has a dedicated 5,400-annual cap that rarely fills, so Singaporean nationals can apply year-round without waiting for a selection outcome. The application goes directly to the U.S. Embassy in Singapore rather than through USCIS, making the process faster and more predictable for construction professionals with a qualifying job offer.
How do I find construction employers in the U.S. who will sponsor H-1B1 Singapore visa applicants?
Use Migrate Mate to search for construction companies with verified Labor Condition Application filing history. Employers who have previously filed LCAs for engineering or construction roles understand the sponsorship process and are far more likely to support an H-1B1 applicant than companies encountering the visa for the first time.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for H-1B1 Singapore visa sponsorship?
Your employer files a Labor Condition Application with DOL and uses OFLC Wage Search to confirm the prevailing wage for your specific role and work location. Once the LCA is certified, they provide you with that certification plus a formal job offer letter. You then complete the DS-160 and schedule your interview at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore.
Can I switch construction employers after arriving in the U.S. on an H-1B1 Singapore visa?
Yes, but the new employer must file a fresh Labor Condition Application with DOL and have it certified before you begin working for them. Unlike H-1B portability rules, H-1B1 does not allow you to start with the new employer upon filing. You'll need to either apply for a new H-1B1 at the consulate or coordinate the timing carefully with both employers.
