About The Team
Our Robotics team is focused on unlocking general-purpose robotics and pushing towards AGI-level intelligence in dynamic, real-world settings. Working across the entire model stack, we integrate cutting-edge hardware and software to explore a broad range of robotic form factors. We strive to seamlessly blend high-level AI capabilities with the constraints of physical systems to improve peoples’ lives.
About The Role
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, integration, and sustaining engineering of mechanical subsystems in robotic platforms. You will work closely with experienced engineers and cross-functional partners to set functional requirements, develop and iterate on hardware to meet program expectations. This role is aimed at candidates with strong fundamentals in mechanical system design — including tolerance, alignment, load paths, wear, and failure modes — and robotics. You will contribute to real hardware programs moving from prototype through early production. You will lead both new subsystem development and ongoing improvements to existing systems based on testing, field performance, and manufacturing feedback.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA, and requires in-person presence 4 days a week.
In this role, you will
- Lead the design and iteration of mechanical subsystems, including structures, mechanisms, and actuators.
- Create and maintain CAD models, assemblies, and drawings with appropriate tolerancing and documentation.
- Build and test prototypes, supporting debugging of mechanical issues such as fit, alignment, friction, and wear.
- Assist in developing test methods and executing validation to evaluate performance, durability, and failure modes.
- Work with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanical components with sensors, actuators, and control systems.
- Support transition of designs from prototype to manufacturable assemblies, incorporating DFM and DFA considerations.
- Collaborate with manufacturing partners and internal build teams to support assembly, troubleshooting, and process improvement.
- Analyze test results and field data to identify issues and drive iterative design improvements.
- Document designs, test results, and changes to support repeatability and production readiness.
- Support sustaining engineering efforts by investigating failures, tracking issues, and implementing corrective actions.
You might thrive in this role if you
- Have strong mechanical intuition and have previous experience lead mechanical design for robotic subsystems.
- Enjoy hands-on work building, testing, and debugging physical systems.
- Are comfortable iterating quickly and learning from incomplete or evolving requirements.
- Can break down problems and work through details such as tolerances, interfaces, and assembly constraints.
- Are proactive in seeking feedback and alignment with cross-functional partners.
- Are detail-oriented and value clear documentation and repeatability.
- Have experience scaling physical products from prototyping through high volume production.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 5+ years experience in mechanical design, robotics, or electromechanical systems.
- Experience with CAD tools (e.g., NX, SolidWorks, or similar).
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as machining, molding, or basic fabrication methods.
- Familiarity with high volume GD&T, engineering drawings and tolerancing practices.
- Experience with prototyping, lab work, or hardware bring-up.
- Experience working on multidisciplinary projects involving hardware and software integration.

Align your credentials to specialty occupation
H-1B1 visa approval requires your Mechanical Design Engineer role to qualify as a specialty occupation. Pull the O*NET profile for your target job title and confirm it lists a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a directly related field as the standard entry requirement.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Mechanical Design Engineer roles by employers who have already filed Labor Condition Applications for this occupation. Employers with LCA history understand the H-1B1 visa process and won't need educating on consular-only filing.
Request your offer letter before the LCA is filed
Your employer files the LCA with DOL before your consulate appointment, not after you accept. Ask for a conditional offer letter early so the DOL certification timeline doesn't delay your visa interview scheduling by weeks.
Verify your degree equivalency for U.S. evaluators
Singapore's four-year engineering degrees from NUS, NTU, or SUTD are generally accepted, but if you hold a three-year polytechnic diploma plus a one-year top-up, get a credential evaluation completed before your employer submits the LCA to avoid an unnecessary revocation.
Prepare a precise job duties letter for the consulate
Consular officers adjudicate H-1B1 visa on the spot without an I-129 petition review buffer. Your employer's support letter should map specific engineering tasks, such as SolidWorks modeling or tolerance stack-up analysis, to your degree field to satisfy the specialty occupation requirement at the interview.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer's LCA must certify wages at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage for Mechanical Engineers in your target metro before you receive an offer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Mechanical Design Engineer role qualify for the H-1B1 Singapore visa?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field. The role must meet the specialty occupation standard, meaning a general degree won't suffice if the job can be performed by candidates from unrelated disciplines. Your employer documents this in the Labor Condition Application filed with DOL before your consulate appointment.
How does the H-1B1 Singapore visa compare to H-1B for mechanical engineers?
The H-1B1 visa skips the H-1B lottery entirely and is processed at the U.S. consulate in Singapore, so there's no USCIS petition and no premium processing option. The annual cap of 5,400 visas for Singaporean nationals has never been exhausted, so timing isn't the constraint it is with H-1B visa. The trade-off is that H-1B1 visa doesn't allow dual intent, so you can't simultaneously pursue a green card while on this status.
How do I find Mechanical Design Engineer employers who will sponsor an H-1B1 visa?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employers with verified H-1B1 visa and LCA filing history for mechanical engineering roles, so you're not cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with consular-only sponsorship. Targeting employers who've filed for this occupation code before cuts down on the back-and-forth about what the process actually requires.
Can I switch employers on an H-1B1 visa if I'm already working in the U.S.?
Yes, but unlike H-1B portability, there's no cap-gap or AC21 protection. Your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL, and you'll need to obtain a new H-1B1 visa stamp at the consulate before starting with them if your current visa has expired. Plan for a gap in work authorization if the consulate appointment and processing extend beyond your current status end date.
What documents should I bring to my H-1B1 consulate interview as a mechanical engineer?
Bring your certified LCA, your employer's support letter detailing your engineering duties and degree requirement, your original degree certificate and transcripts, your DS-160 confirmation, and your passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended entry date. If your degree is from a Singaporean polytechnic plus a top-up program, include a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization to preempt questions about equivalency.
