Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Principal Engineer
Verify your degree maps to the role
Consular officers assess whether your specific engineering degree directly supports the Principal Engineer position. A software engineering role backed by a computer science degree clears this bar cleanly; a general management degree typically doesn't, even with years of technical experience.
Search DOL LCA filings using Migrate Mate
Filter for Principal Engineer Labor Condition Applications filed under H-1B1 visa to identify which employers have active sponsorship infrastructure. Migrate Mate surfaces this DOL filing history by role, so you can prioritize outreach to companies already familiar with the process.
Request the prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your specific occupation code and work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search for SOC code 17-2199 or the closest Principal Engineer equivalent before your offer conversation begins.
Confirm the employer understands H-1B1 distinctions
Many U.S. hiring teams default to H-1B assumptions when they hear 'visa sponsorship.' Clarify upfront that H-1B1 visa for Singaporeans skips USCIS petition filing entirely and goes directly to consular processing, which cuts weeks from the timeline and eliminates lottery risk.
Prepare your specialty occupation documentation early
Collect your degree transcripts, a detailed job description, and any professional engineering credentials before interviews begin. Consular officers at the Singapore U.S. Embassy can request evidence that the role genuinely requires a specialty degree, not just that your employer prefers one.
Align your start date with LCA certification timing
The employer must file and receive DOL LCA certification before your consular appointment. DOL typically certifies LCAs within seven business days, but building in a two-week buffer protects your start date if the filing requires a correction or resubmission.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Principal Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B1 Singapore purposes?
Yes. Principal Engineer positions require at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a directly related technical field, which satisfies the specialty occupation standard. The consular officer will assess whether the specific job duties genuinely require that degree level, so your employer's job description should make the technical complexity explicit rather than listing broad leadership responsibilities.
How does H-1B1 Singapore compare to H-1B for Principal Engineer roles?
H-1B1 Singapore bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely, so there's no annual registration gamble for Principal Engineer candidates. The annual cap is 5,400 visas and has never been exhausted. Processing goes through the U.S. Embassy in Singapore rather than USCIS, which typically means faster resolution. The main trade-off is that H-1B1 doesn't carry dual-intent protection, so you'll need to demonstrate nonimmigrant intent at each renewal.
How do I find employers actively sponsoring H-1B1 Singapore visas for Principal Engineer positions?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified DOL Labor Condition Application filing history, so you can identify employers who have already sponsored H-1B1 visa roles rather than guessing from company size or brand name. Targeting employers with an existing sponsorship track record for senior engineering titles reduces the risk that H-1B1 unfamiliarity kills your offer late in the process.
Can I switch employers after starting work on an H-1B1 Singapore visa?
Yes, but your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need a new consular appointment in Singapore before you can begin work for them in the U.S. Unlike H-1B portability rules, H-1B1 visa doesn't allow you to start with a new employer while a petition is pending. Plan for a gap in U.S. employment authorization during the transition if you're already in the country.
What happens to my H-1B1 status if my Principal Engineer role is restructured or I'm laid off?
H-1B1 visa status is tied to the specific employer and role approved on your LCA. A layoff or significant restructuring that changes your job duties or employer of record ends your H-1B1 authorization. You have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer and begin the H-1B1 process, change to another valid status, or depart the U.S. Acting quickly is essential because the grace period doesn't extend for job searching alone.
