Verify your internship qualifies as agricultural
H-2A visa covers hands-on field and production work, not office-based or administrative internships. Confirm your role involves crop cultivation, livestock handling, or direct farm operations before applying, since DOL rejects job orders for roles that don't meet the agricultural-work definition.
Request your employer's ETA-790 job order early
Your H-2A sponsor must file a certified ETA-790 job order with DOL at least 75 days before your start date. Ask the farm or ranch to share that order so you can verify your position title, duties, and housing terms match what they've promised you.
Search H-2A intern openings on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters seasonal agricultural listings by H-2A sponsorship status, so you're only seeing employers already set up to file. Use it to find intern roles tied to specific crop seasons or livestock cycles in your target region.
Confirm housing meets federal H-2A standards
Your employer must provide free housing that passes DOL's Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspection standards. Before accepting an offer, ask whether housing is on-site or off-site and whether it's been certified for the current season.
Check the O*NET profile for your intern duties
Reviewing O*NET for agricultural worker and farm internship occupation codes helps you describe your expected tasks accurately on your visa application. Mismatches between listed duties and actual farm work can delay your H-2A petition at the DOL review stage.
Gather your academic enrollment documents before the offer
Some H-2A intern roles require proof of current enrollment in an agricultural, environmental, or related academic program. Have your institution issue an official enrollment letter and transcript before your employer submits the H-2A petition to USCIS.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find intern jobs that offer H-2A visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search for intern positions with confirmed H-2A sponsorship. Employers listed there have already committed to the H-2A process, meaning they're prepared to file the required DOL job order, provide certified housing, and pay the AEWR. Filtering by visa type saves you from applying to farms that haven't set up sponsorship.
What obligations does an H-2A employer have for an intern position?
Under H-2A, your employer must provide free housing that meets DOL safety standards, cover inbound and outbound transportation, and pay at least the AEWR or the prevailing wage for the occupation, whichever is higher. They must also file a certified ETA-790 job order with DOL at least 75 days before your start date and guarantee work for at least three-fourths of the contract period.
Does an agricultural internship qualify for H-2A if it's part of a university program?
Yes, as long as the majority of your duties involve direct agricultural production work such as planting, cultivation, harvesting, or livestock care. DOL evaluates the actual job tasks described in the ETA-790, not the academic framing. Internships that split time between farm work and classroom instruction may face additional scrutiny at the petition review stage.
How long can I stay in the U.S. on an H-2A intern placement?
H-2A status is tied to the length of your employer's certified job order, which must be seasonal or temporary. USCIS can approve a single H-2A petition for up to one year, with extensions possible in one-year increments up to a three-year maximum. After reaching the three-year limit, you must remain outside the U.S. for at least three months before a new H-2A period begins.
