Transform the everyday with us!
In this role you will work onsite in Princeton, NJ.
Our Princeton facility is recognized for providing a stimulating environment for highly talented and self-motivated students. You will have the opportunity to test your knowledge in a challenging problem-solving environment. You will be encouraged to think out of the box, innovate and find solutions to real-life problems.
Are you passionate about making industrial AI safe, trustworthy, and ready for the factory floor? Do you want to explore how AI models can be securely integrated with real-time control systems, across industries like pharma, chemicals, food & beverage, and energy? Here's the right internship opportunity for you!
Join our research group, Automation Engineering Software, located in Princeton, NJ, for a 3–6-month internship, and contribute to research on safe AI integration with industrial control systems, including modular automation, industrial edge computing, and AI governance frameworks. Our close contact with different business units in Siemens provides the opportunity to contribute to and gain experience in real industrial challenges. During this internship, you will experience the excitement and challenges of industrial research at the intersection of AI, process control, and industrial standards.
An internship with Siemens Technology is a great opportunity for students to gain real-world experience in a diverse work environment.
Key responsibilities:
- Contribute to prototyping and benchmarking industrial communication middleware (e.g., pub/sub protocols, OPC UA bridges, message brokers) for low-latency AI-to-control-system integration.
- Develop test harnesses and performance benchmarks for evaluating AI model inference latency and communication round-trip times in simulated industrial environments.
- Build observability dashboards and monitoring infrastructure for tracking system health, message latency, and AI model behavior in real time.
- Explore integration patterns for Unified Namespace (UNS) architectures and industrial data modeling standards.
- Analyze compliance gaps against industrial automation standards (MTP/IEC 63280, IEC 62443, ISA-88/95) and document findings.
- Collaborate with researchers and engineers on end-to-end validation scenarios, documentation, and regulatory compliance analysis (e.g., EU AI Act).
Basic Qualifications:
- An MS or PhD student pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or similar from an accredited university.
- Strong programming proficiency in Python, including familiarity with at least one systems language (Rust, C++, Go).
- Foundational understanding of distributed systems concepts (pub/sub messaging, state machines, REST APIs).
- Experience with data analysis, visualization, and scientific computing (NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib).
- Ability to work in Linux environments with Docker and Git.
- Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the internship.
Preferred Qualification:
- Practical experience with industrial communication protocols (OPC UA, MQTT, Modbus) or edge computing platforms.
- Familiarity with process simulation, SCADA, or industrial control system environments.
- Knowledge of ML model serving frameworks (ONNX Runtime, TensorFlow Serving, or similar).
- Experience with observability tools (Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry).
- Understanding of industrial standards (ISA-88, ISA-95, IEC 62443, MTP/IEC 63280).
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing (pytest, GitHub Actions).
- Flexibility and adaptability to work in an interdisciplinary team spanning software, process engineering, and research.
May consider sponsorship of J-1 visa students (6-12 months), dependent upon program requirements.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in AI Researcher
Align your CV to Research Scholar criteria
The J-1 Research Scholar category requires postgraduate-level research credentials. Document your publications, lab affiliations, and funded projects explicitly, since the designated sponsor evaluates academic standing before issuing your DS-2019.
Target host institutions with existing J-1 agreements
Universities, national labs, and corporate R&D centers that regularly host J-1 Research Scholars already have agreements with a designated sponsor organization. Prioritize these employers to avoid delays caused by a host negotiating sponsor terms from scratch.
Search verified roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter AI Researcher positions at U.S. employers whose hiring patterns align with J-1 exchange visitor programs, so you're applying where sponsorship pathways are already established rather than introducing the concept to an unprepared recruiter.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement early
Many AI Researcher J-1 positions at government-funded labs trigger the two-year home-country physical presence requirement under INA Section 212(e). Confirm with your prospective host whether the role is government-financed before you accept an offer.
Submit your training plan with technical precision
Your DS-7002 training plan must outline specific AI research methodologies, tools, and learning objectives by phase. Vague plans citing only 'machine learning research' are returned for revision by the designated sponsor, adding weeks to your start timeline.
Verify wage compliance against OFLC standards
Even though the J-1 isn't subject to PERM labor certification, your host employer must pay you the prevailing wage for your occupation and location. Cross-check the offered compensation against the OFLC Wage Search before signing your host agreement.

Find AI Researcher JobsAI Researcher J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an AI Researcher role?
Most AI Researcher positions fall under the J-1 Research Scholar category, which is designed for postgraduate-level researchers at universities, research institutes, and corporate R&D labs. If you're still completing a degree, the Intern category may apply for structured internship programs. Short-Term Scholar covers engagements under six months, such as conference collaborations or visiting researcher stints.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for an AI Researcher position?
Your J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. The host institution where you'll conduct research arranges sponsorship through a designated organization such as IIE or Cultural Vistas, which then issues your DS-2019 form. Your employer is the host, not the sponsor. This distinction matters because the designated organization, not your employer, is responsible for your program compliance.
Does a J-1 AI Researcher role trigger the two-year home residency requirement?
It depends on the funding source and your country of nationality. Positions at federally funded research labs or roles funded by a U.S. government agency commonly trigger the two-year home-country physical presence requirement under INA Section 212(e). If triggered, you must return home for two years before changing to most immigrant or nonimmigrant statuses, unless you obtain a waiver. Confirm the funding structure with your host institution before accepting an offer.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 AI Researcher?
Use Migrate Mate to identify AI Researcher openings at U.S. employers whose hiring patterns align with J-1 exchange visitor programs. Many host institutions already have sponsor agreements in place, which significantly shortens the visa issuance timeline. Targeting employers with established J-1 hosting experience means the process is familiar to their HR and legal teams.
What documents does a designated J-1 sponsor require from an AI Researcher applicant?
Designated sponsors typically require a detailed CV showing your research background, evidence of institutional affiliation, a signed DS-7002 training plan co-developed with your host supervisor, proof of English proficiency, and documentation of health insurance meeting J-1 minimums. For Research Scholar applications, sponsors also review your publication record and the scientific merit of the proposed research program before issuing the DS-2019.
