Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an Android Engineer
Document your Android specialization precisely
Your DS-2019 training plan must map your Android skills, such as Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, or Android SDK, to specific U.S. learning objectives. Vague descriptions of general software development work get flagged by designated sponsors during review.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee program eligibility
The Intern category requires current enrollment in a degree program, while the Trainee category fits professionals within five years of graduation or with one year of relevant Android development work experience outside the United States.
Target host employers with existing sponsor relationships
Some U.S. tech companies already work with designated J-1 sponsor organizations like Cultural Vistas or AIPT. Asking a recruiter directly whether the company has hosted J-1 Trainees before saves weeks of back-and-forth on program feasibility.
Search for J-1-compatible Android roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters U.S. employer listings to surface Android Engineer positions at companies open to exchange visitor placements, so you can focus outreach on hosts that already understand the DS-2019 process.
Confirm the two-year home residency requirement early
Certain J-1 participants, particularly those government-funded or from designated countries, must return home for two years before changing to most other U.S. visa categories. Clarify with your designated sponsor whether your Android Trainee placement triggers this requirement before accepting an offer.
Align your training plan duration with program limits
J-1 Intern placements cap at 12 months and Trainee placements at 18 months. Structure your proposed training objectives and project milestones within these limits so your host employer's HR team can complete the Form DS-7002 training plan accurately.

Find Android Engineer JobsAndroid Engineer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an Android Engineer role?
It depends on your career stage. If you're currently enrolled in a university degree program, the Intern category applies and allows a placement of up to 12 months. If you've graduated and have relevant Android development experience, the Trainee category fits and allows up to 18 months. Both require a U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization to issue the DS-2019, not the hiring employer directly.
Is the hiring company my J-1 visa sponsor?
No. The hiring company is your host employer, not your visa sponsor. Your J-1 sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or IIE, that reviews your training plan, issues the DS-2019 form, and monitors your program compliance. The host employer agrees to your training objectives but does not hold sponsorship authority under the exchange visitor program.
Does a J-1 Android Engineer placement count as full employment?
Not in the same sense as an H-1B. The J-1 Trainee and Intern categories are structured around learning objectives, not permanent employment. Your role must include a formal training plan on Form DS-7002, and the work you do should reflect skill development rather than filling a standard production headcount need. Designated sponsors review the plan to confirm this distinction before issuing the DS-2019.
How do I find U.S. employers open to J-1 Android Engineer placements?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point. It surfaces Android Engineer positions at U.S. employers that are open to exchange visitor arrangements, letting you identify host companies before you approach a designated sponsor. Once you have an interested employer, your designated sponsor steps in to issue the DS-2019 and set up the training plan. Cold outreach to employers unfamiliar with J-1 logistics is significantly less efficient.
Can a J-1 Android Engineer placement lead to an H-1B or other work visa?
Potentially, but the two-year home residency requirement can block that path for some participants. If your J-1 is subject to this requirement, you must return to your home country for two years before qualifying for H-1B, L-1, or adjustment of status. Not all J-1 Trainee placements trigger this requirement, so confirm your status with your designated sponsor before making long-term plans around a U.S. career transition.
