Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an iOS Engineer
Align your portfolio to U.S. iOS standards
Host employers reviewing J-1 Trainee applicants expect Swift-native code samples and App Store-published work. Document your frameworks clearly in your portfolio before outreach, since training plan approval depends on demonstrating measurable skill progression.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee program eligibility
The J-1 Intern category applies if you're currently enrolled in a degree program. The Trainee category applies if you've graduated within the past year or have relevant work experience. Applying to the wrong category delays your DS-2019 issuance.
Search Migrate Mate for J-1-aligned iOS roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter for iOS Engineer positions at U.S. employers who have hosted exchange visitors before. This narrows your search to organizations already familiar with training plan requirements and DS-2019 coordination.
Require a written training plan before accepting an offer
Your designated sponsor must approve a formal training plan outlining your objectives, supervision structure, and evaluation schedule. Get this document drafted with your host employer before signing anything, since sponsors won't issue a DS-2019 without it.
Check your role's 2-year home residency requirement early
If your J-1 program is government-funded or your home country is on the skills list, a 2-year home residency requirement may attach to your visa. Confirm this with your designated sponsor before accepting, as it affects future H-1B or green card eligibility.
Verify prevailing wage compliance with your host employer
While the J-1 doesn't require an LCA like the H-1B, host employers are still obligated to pay exchange visitors a fair wage. Cross-reference the iOS Engineer wage level for your metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before finalizing compensation.

Find iOS Engineer JobsiOS Engineer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an iOS Engineer role?
The J-1 Trainee category fits most iOS Engineers who have graduated within the past 12 months or who hold relevant professional experience. If you're still enrolled in a university program, the Intern category applies instead. Both require a State Department-designated sponsor to issue your DS-2019, not the employer itself.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for an iOS Engineer position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT, not the tech company hiring you. The hiring company is your host employer and signs the training plan, but the designated sponsor issues the DS-2019 form and is legally responsible for program compliance throughout your placement.
How long can I work as a J-1 iOS Engineer in the United States?
The J-1 Trainee program allows placements up to 18 months. The Intern category caps out at 12 months. Extensions beyond these limits are not available within the same J-1 category, so plan your training objectives and timeline with your designated sponsor before the placement begins to make full use of your authorized period.
How do I find iOS Engineer host employers open to J-1 exchange visitors?
Migrate Mate lets you search for iOS Engineer roles at U.S. employers who have a track record of hosting exchange visitors. This saves time compared to cold outreach, since many companies aren't aware they can host J-1 Trainees without obtaining their own visa sponsorship designation.
Can I transition from J-1 status to an H-1B after my iOS Engineer placement ends?
Yes, but only if the 2-year home residency requirement doesn't apply to your J-1. If it does apply, you must either return home for two years, obtain a waiver, or find an exemption before USCIS will approve an H-1B or most other work visas. Confirm your requirement status with your designated sponsor at the start of your program.
