Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Mobile Engineer
Frame your portfolio around measurable outcomes
J-1 training plans require demonstrating skill progression, not just employment. Document each project with before-and-after metrics, languages mastered, and architecture decisions you owned. This evidence directly supports the training objectives your designated sponsor will need to justify.
Target host employers with existing J-1 infrastructure
Companies that have hosted J-1 Trainees before already understand DS-2019 timelines and training plan requirements. Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. mobile engineering roles at employers with a demonstrated record of hosting international exchange visitors.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee eligibility before applying
If you're currently enrolled in a degree program, the J-1 Intern category applies. If you graduated within the past 12 months or have at least one year of post-degree work experience, you qualify under Trainee. Applying under the wrong category can delay or void your DS-2019 issuance.
Verify your host employer meets DOL training plan standards
Your designated sponsor, whether CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT, must approve a formal Training or Internship Placement Plan before issuing your DS-2019. Confirm your host employer can document specific learning objectives tied to mobile development disciplines, not just day-to-day job tasks.
Benchmark your offered compensation against OFLC Wage Search
J-1 Trainees must receive compensation commensurate with similarly situated U.S. workers. Run the OFLC Wage Search for Software Developer or Mobile Application Developer roles in your host city before accepting an offer to confirm compliance and avoid program violations.
Clarify the 2-year home residency requirement early
Some J-1 Trainees are subject to INA Section 212(e), which requires returning home for two years before applying for H-1B or a green card. Government-funded exchange programs and certain nationalities trigger this requirement. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before signing an offer letter.

Find Mobile Engineer JobsMobile Engineer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Mobile Engineer role?
Current students pursuing mobile engineering internships typically qualify under the J-1 Intern category. Recent graduates or early-career professionals with at least one year of relevant post-degree experience qualify under J-1 Trainee. Research-focused roles at universities or labs may fall under Research Scholar. The correct category determines your DS-2019 eligibility and the maximum duration of your exchange program.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Mobile Engineer position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or AIPT, not the hiring company itself. The tech company or startup you join is the host employer. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, approves your training plan, and monitors program compliance throughout your stay. The host employer pays your compensation and supervises your day-to-day work.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host J-1 Mobile Engineers?
Use Migrate Mate to search for mobile engineering roles at U.S. employers that have demonstrated openness to J-1 exchange visitors. Not every employer is familiar with the host-employer obligations under J-1, including training plan documentation and mid-program check-ins, so targeting companies with prior J-1 hosting experience reduces friction during the offer stage.
What does the J-1 training plan require for a mobile engineering placement?
Your designated sponsor requires a formal Training or Internship Placement Plan that outlines specific skills you will develop, supervision arrangements, and weekly phase breakdowns. For mobile engineering, this means documenting progression across areas like iOS or Android development, API integration, or performance optimization. Generic job descriptions do not satisfy this requirement. The host employer and designated sponsor must both sign off before your DS-2019 is issued.
Can a J-1 Mobile Engineer transition to H-1B status after the program ends?
Possibly, but the 2-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e) can block a direct transition. If your J-1 program was government-funded or your home country appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, you must return home for two years before applying for H-1B or permanent residence, unless you obtain a waiver. Confirm your 212(e) status with your designated sponsor before making post-program plans.
