Align your training plan with QA specializations
Your DS-2019 training plan must specify the QA competencies you'll develop, such as automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, or performance benchmarking. Vague plans get rejected, so map your objectives to concrete tools and methodologies before submitting.
Verify your program category before applying
Use the Intern category if you're currently enrolled in a degree program or graduated within the past 12 months. Use the Trainee category if you have at least one year of post-graduation QA experience. Applying under the wrong category delays your DS-2019.
Target host employers with structured QA teams
Host companies need to demonstrate they can provide genuine training supervision. Software firms with dedicated QA departments and documented testing workflows are far more likely to satisfy a designated sponsor's host approval requirements than early-stage startups.
Search for J-1-aligned QA roles on Migrate Mate
Filter by companies with documented international hiring activity to surface Software QA Engineer positions where J-1 Intern or Trainee sponsorship is a realistic conversation. Migrate Mate surfaces employer-side signals that generic job boards don't show.
Confirm the two-year home residency rule applies to you
Participants from countries with exchange visitor skills lists or who receive government funding may face a two-year home residency requirement after their J-1 ends. Check your DS-2019 and passport country against the State Department skills list before accepting an offer.
Get your host employer's EIN and E-Verify status ready
Designated sponsors require your host employer's Employer Identification Number and often confirm E-Verify enrollment before approving a training plan. Collect these from your employer contact early so the sponsor review doesn't stall at the host-vetting stage.

Find Software QA Engineer JobsSoftware QA Engineer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Software QA Engineer roles?
Current students and recent graduates within 12 months of degree completion typically qualify under the Intern category. If you've been working in QA, software testing, or a related technical field for at least one year post-graduation, the Trainee category applies instead. Your designated sponsor determines the correct category based on your educational background and work history.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Software QA Engineer position?
The J-1 sponsor is a State Department-designated organization, not your employer. Organizations like CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT issue your DS-2019 form and oversee program compliance. The company where you work is the host employer. You need both: a host employer willing to provide training and a designated sponsor willing to approve that host and issue your visa documentation.
How do I find U.S. companies open to hosting a J-1 Software QA Engineer?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter for companies with international hiring patterns and surface Software QA Engineer openings where J-1 sponsorship is a realistic outcome. Generic job boards don't surface employer-side sponsorship signals, so you end up applying broadly without knowing whether a company has ever navigated this process before.
What does a J-1 training plan need to include for a QA engineering role?
Your training plan, called a Form DS-7002, must document the specific skills you'll develop, the supervision structure, and how each phase of the program advances your professional goals. For QA roles, this typically means listing tools like Selenium, JIRA, or TestRail alongside the phases where you'll use them. Vague or template-style plans often fail host approval, so tailor the document to your actual placement.
Can I switch host employers mid-program if my QA role isn't working out?
Changing host employers mid-program requires your designated sponsor's approval and usually a new or amended DS-2019. The new host must go through the same vetting process as the original. Your J-1 status is tied to the approved training plan, not the offer letter, so any host change needs to happen through the sponsor before you start at the new company.
