ABOUT THE ROLE:
S&P Global Market Intelligence is seeking highly motivated graduate students to join the Advisory Services team as Economic Consulting Interns. This internship provides an opportunity to work at the intersection of economic research, policy analysis, and consulting.
Interns will support project teams across a range of economic consulting engagements, including macroeconomic analysis, policy impact assessments, sector studies, economic modeling, and strategic advisory work for public- and private-sector clients.
THE TEAM:
The Global Insight (GI) group, within S&P Global’s Market Intelligence division, supports clients across all government and private sectors with data and research on macroeconomics, markets, trade, supply chains, geopolitics, and operational risk. GI’s services consist of subscriptions to data/analysis products and consulting. This role is in the consulting team. The team designs and delivers custom analytical solutions for client requirements that are not met by subscription products. These custom solutions typically integrate datasets, deploy specialized models, and/or develop new approaches to deliver unique insights to support clients in their strategic decisions. Whereas most major consultancies rely on large teams to provide value, our team is fortunate to draw on an unparalleled breadth of data, research, expertise, and models to solve client problems, and support planning and decision-making. These proprietary assets are the result of decades of development and proven value.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
Interns will contribute across two main areas: client engagement support and capability development.
Client Engagement and Proposal Support
- Conduct literature reviews and background research for consulting engagements and proposals
- Assist with data collection, cleaning, and empirical analysis
- Support economic and quantitative modeling tasks
- Contribute to drafting technical memoranda, research summaries, and presentation materials
- Assist in preparing background analysis for proposals and business development initiatives
Capability and Knowledge Development
- Document economic modeling frameworks and analytical methodologies
- Support development of dashboards, analytical tools, and data workflows
- Build and organize structured research repositories and datasets
- Develop reusable templates and documentation to support recurring analyses
- Contribute to internal knowledge-sharing initiatives, including presentations to the Advisory Services team
COMPENSATION/BENEFITS INFORMATION: (This section is only applicable to US candidates)
- S&P Global states that the anticipated base salary range for this position is $30 to $35. The final base salary for this role will be based on the individual’s geographic location, experience level, skill set, training, licenses, and certifications.
- This role is not eligible for additional compensation such as an annual incentive bonus or sales commission plan.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
BASIC REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program in economics, public policy, statistics, econometrics, finance, or a related quantitative field
- For PhD candidates: completion of coursework and entry into dissertation phase
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including experience with econometrics or economic modeling
- Experience working with data analysis tools such as EViews, R, Stata, Python
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated interest in applied economics, policy analysis, or consulting
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with macroeconomic, financial, or policy analysis
- Familiarity with statistical or econometric modeling techniques
- Experience working with large datasets and data visualization tools
- Ability to translate complex analytical results into clear written insights
- Interest in economic consulting, public policy, or economic advisory work
RIGHT TO WORK REQUIREMENTS:
This role is limited to persons with indefinite right to work in the United States.
All employees are required to work from the office a minimum of 2 days per week.
We require all candidates who reach the final stage of our interview process to attend at least one in-person interview, which is ordinarily at your nearest S&P Global office. This must be completed before we can proceed to an offer.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Business Development Consultant
Frame your training plan around measurable outcomes
Designated sponsors require a structured training plan before issuing your DS-2019. Document specific business development skills you'll develop, such as market analysis, pipeline management, and client acquisition strategies, with clear milestones your host employer can verify.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee category eligibility
The Intern category requires current enrollment in a degree program, while Trainee applies to professionals with a degree plus one year of relevant experience, or five years of work history. Misidentifying your category delays your DS-2019 issuance and can unsettle your host employer.
Target host employers with existing international training programs
Search for U.S. companies in consulting, market expansion, or professional services that have hosted J-1 trainees before. Use Migrate Mate to filter for roles and employers aligned with J-1 sponsorship rather than cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with the host employer model.
Prepare a field-specific credential package before outreach
Business development roles require demonstrating commercial impact. Assemble a portfolio showing revenue influenced, partnerships developed, or markets entered before you contact potential host employers. Sponsors and hosts both scrutinize whether your background justifies the training objective.
Clarify the 2-year home residency requirement early
Some J-1 Trainee participants are subject to a two-year home-country residency requirement before qualifying for certain other U.S. visas. Confirm with your designated sponsor whether your country or funding source triggers this requirement before accepting a host employer offer.
Align your offer letter with the training plan language
Your host employer's offer letter and your DS-2019 training plan must describe the same role and objectives. Discrepancies between the two documents are a common reason designated sponsors delay or reject DS-2019 issuance for Trainee applicants in consulting roles.

Find Business Development Consultant JobsBusiness Development Consultant J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Business Development Consultant role?
Most Business Development Consultant positions fall under the J-1 Trainee category if you hold a degree and at least one year of relevant professional experience, or five years of work history in the field. Current students completing a degree may qualify under the Intern category if the placement is tied to their academic program. The Specialist category can apply in narrower cases where the role requires recognized expertise in a highly specific discipline.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for a business development role?
Your visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. Organizations such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT issue your DS-2019 form and oversee your training plan. The company hiring you for the business development role is your host employer. They commit to the training program but do not file for your visa or carry the legal sponsorship designation.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host a J-1 Trainee in a consulting role?
Use Migrate Mate to search for business development and consulting roles at U.S. companies that are open to international candidates and familiar with the J-1 host employer model. Many companies in professional services, market research, and technology have prior experience with J-1 trainees but don't advertise that in standard job postings, so filtering by sponsorship alignment saves significant time.
Does the 2-year home residency requirement apply to Business Development Consultants on J-1?
It depends on your country of nationality, your country of most recent legal residence, and whether your exchange program is funded by a government or your home country's international affairs programs. If the requirement applies, you must return home for two years before being eligible for H-1B, L-1, or immigrant visa status. Your designated sponsor will determine applicability when issuing your DS-2019.
Can I extend my J-1 Trainee placement if my host employer wants to keep me longer?
J-1 Trainee placements are capped at 18 months, with a possible extension to 24 months for trainees in hospitality. Business development roles typically fall within the standard 18-month limit. Extensions must be approved by your designated sponsor before your current DS-2019 expires, and the host employer must submit updated training objectives demonstrating continued program value.
