Build a training plan before applying
Designated sponsors require a detailed DS-7002 training plan before issuing your DS-2019. Map out specific business development competencies you'll develop each month, including market analysis, client acquisition strategy, and cross-functional collaboration. Vague plans get rejected.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee eligibility
The Intern category requires current enrollment in a degree program, while Trainee applies to those with a degree plus one year of related experience, or five years of work experience. Applying under the wrong category means your sponsor can't issue the DS-2019.
Confirm host employers understand the DS-2019 structure
Many business development teams have never hosted a J-1 exchange visitor. Before accepting an offer, verify that the employer knows they are the host organization, not the visa sponsor, and is prepared to sign the DS-7002 training plan with an approved designated sponsor.
Target companies with international growth mandates
Business development roles tied to international market expansion, foreign partnership development, or cross-border deal structuring are far easier to frame as structured training programs. Host companies with global operations have a clearer rationale for sponsoring an exchange visitor in this function.
Use Migrate Mate to filter roles by J-1 compatibility
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers actively hosting international professionals in business development functions. Filtering by sponsorship history helps you focus outreach on companies already familiar with the J-1 host employer process, reducing friction in offer negotiations.
Check the two-year home residency requirement early
Some J-1 participants in business development programs are subject to a two-year home-country residency requirement after their exchange, depending on funding source and nationality. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before signing any offer, as this affects future visa eligibility.

Find Business Development JobsBusiness Development J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a business development role?
Most business development positions fall under the J-1 Trainee category if you hold a relevant degree plus at least one year of experience, or five or more years of work experience without a degree. Current students completing a degree can use the Intern category. Both require a host employer and a designated sponsor to issue the DS-2019 and oversee the training plan.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for business development roles?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not the hiring employer. The employer acts as the host organization and must sign the DS-7002 training plan. The designated sponsor issues the DS-2019, monitors compliance, and is legally responsible for the exchange program, not the business development team that interviewed you.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 business development professional?
Migrate Mate lets you search U.S. roles and employers by sponsorship compatibility, which is particularly useful for business development positions where J-1 hosting is less common than in STEM fields. Focusing your outreach on companies with international operations or existing exchange visitor history reduces the time spent educating employers about the host organization process.
Can a business development host employer refuse to sign the training plan?
Yes. The DS-7002 training plan is a legal document the host employer must complete and sign. If a hiring manager agrees to bring you on but the legal or HR team declines to sign the training agreement, your designated sponsor cannot issue the DS-2019. Confirm the employer's willingness to complete this step before accepting any offer or paying program fees.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect business development J-1 participants?
It can, depending on your country of nationality and the funding source of your exchange program. J-1 participants subject to this requirement must return to their home country for two years before applying for an H-1B, L-1, or immigrant visa. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before the program starts, as this condition significantly affects long-term U.S. career planning in business development.
