- Analyze the sports media landscape to identify emerging narratives, emotional storylines, and cultural moments that influence consumer behavior
- Collaborate with professional sports team partners on initiatives designed to evolve the business side of sports and fan engagement
- Participate in live client calls and meetings to gain exposure to partnership strategy, relationship management, and the deal lifecycle
- Draft follow-up communications and support active partnership opportunities from outreach through execution
- Build and maintain curated prospect lists with personalized outreach designed to uncover new direct brand opportunities
- Leverage AI tools such as Claude and ChatGPT to streamline workflows, improve efficiency, and enhance repeatable processes
- Present an end-of-summer recap to stakeholders summarizing key contributions, insights, and learnings
Requirements
- You have a genuine passion for sports and understand the emotional narratives, rivalries, and fan experiences that shape the industry
- You are currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Economics, Media, Sports Management, Communications, or a related field (Rising Sophomore or Junior preferred), or equivalent experience
- You bring strong storytelling and presentation skills, with proficiency in Google Slides or PowerPoint
- You are highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment
- You are comfortable in collaborative and client-facing settings, with strong verbal and written communication skills

Frame your portfolio around structured learning
Your DS-2019 training plan must show measurable skill progression, not just job duties. Document marketing competencies you're building phase by phase, such as campaign analytics, CRM tools, or content strategy, so your sponsor can defend the exchange value.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee eligibility before applying
If you're currently enrolled, the Intern category applies. If you've graduated within the past 12 months or have relevant professional experience, you qualify as a Trainee. Targeting roles mismatched to your category wastes time with host employers who can't place you.
Search Migrate Mate to find host employers open to J-1
Many marketing teams accept J-1 visa exchange visitors but don't advertise it explicitly. Use Migrate Mate to surface U.S. employers actively hiring Marketing Support Specialists who align with J-1 visa program structures, so you're not cold-applying to unreceptive hiring managers.
Verify your host employer can sign a training plan
Not every company is set up to act as a J-1 host. Confirm your prospective employer is willing to assign a workplace supervisor and sign a formal training plan before you invest in the interview process. Hosts who've never worked with J-1 sponsors often decline at the offer stage.
Check whether your role triggers the home residency requirement
Marketing Support Specialist positions funded by your home-country government or a U.S. government agency may carry a two-year home residency requirement under Section 212(e). Resolve this before accepting an offer, since it affects future visa options including H-1B visa.
Request your DS-2019 well before your intended start date
Your designated sponsor, such as Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or AIPT, issues the DS-2019 only after reviewing and approving your training plan. Allow at least four to six weeks for this step so consular appointment scheduling doesn't delay your start date.
Marketing Support Specialist J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers Marketing Support Specialist roles?
It depends on your status. If you're currently enrolled in a degree program, the Intern category applies to marketing placements that relate directly to your field of study. If you've already graduated or have professional marketing experience, the Trainee category fits instead. Your designated sponsor will confirm which applies based on your background and your host employer's training plan.
Does the hiring company sponsor my J-1 visa directly?
No. The J-1 visa works differently from employer-sponsored visas like H-1B. Your host employer, the company where you'll work, does not issue the visa. A U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization, such as Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or IIE, issues your DS-2019 form and is legally responsible for program compliance. Your host employer participates by approving and supervising your training plan.
How do I find marketing employers that are open to J-1 exchange visitors?
Most marketing teams don't advertise J-1 compatibility in job postings. Migrate Mate lets you search for Marketing Support Specialist roles and host employers that already work within J-1 program structures, which shortens the time you spend identifying receptive employers. Starting with employers familiar with the DS-2019 process significantly reduces the risk of an offer falling through.
What does a J-1 training plan need to include for a marketing role?
Your training plan, filed on Form DS-7002 for Trainee applicants, must outline specific marketing competencies you'll develop, the tools and platforms involved, the timeline for each phase, and the name of your workplace supervisor. Generic descriptions like 'assist with marketing campaigns' are typically rejected. Your designated sponsor reviews the plan before issuing the DS-2019, so specificity matters.
Can I stay in the U.S. and switch to another visa after my J-1 ends?
Possibly, but only if you're not subject to the two-year home residency requirement under Section 212(e). Marketing roles funded by a government entity or certain exchange programs can trigger this requirement, which bars you from changing to H-1B or getting a green card until you return home for two years. Confirm your 212(e) status with your designated sponsor before your program ends.
