Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Buyer
Document your procurement credentials before applying
Compile transcripts, degree certificates, and professional references that show direct experience in purchasing, vendor negotiation, or supply chain management. Designated sponsors evaluate these materials when deciding whether to issue a DS-2019 for a Trainee program.
Identify host employers with active training programs
Target companies that have hosted J-1 Trainees before, particularly in retail, manufacturing, or logistics. Hosts must complete a formal Training Plan (Form DS-7002), so employers familiar with that process move faster than those encountering it for the first time.
Search Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned Buyer openings
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. Buyer roles at employers who have a track record of supporting international program participants. Targeting those companies significantly reduces the friction of securing a host willing to complete the required documentation.
Verify the home-residency requirement applies to your situation
Certain J-1 participants, including government-funded trainees, must return home for two years before changing status or obtaining an immigrant visa. Confirm with your designated sponsor whether your specific program and funding source trigger this requirement before accepting an offer.
Align your training plan to actual Buyer responsibilities
The DS-7002 Training Plan must describe concrete, phase-based learning objectives tied to procurement tasks like purchase order management, supplier evaluation, and contract review. Vague or overly broad plans are common reasons designated sponsors delay or decline to issue the DS-2019.
Confirm your host employer's E-Verify enrollment early
Some designated sponsors require host employers to be enrolled in E-Verify as a compliance condition before issuing a DS-2019. Ask the employer to confirm enrollment during the offer stage, not after your training plan has already been submitted for review.

Find Buyer JobsBuyer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Buyer role?
The Trainee category applies if you have a degree and at least one year of related work experience outside the United States, or five or more years of professional procurement experience. The Intern category fits current students or recent graduates within 12 months of completing a degree in a relevant field such as business, supply chain, or economics.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a Buyer?
A U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, is your visa sponsor. That organization issues your DS-2019 and monitors your program compliance. Your hiring employer is the host, not the sponsor. The host provides the job and the training environment but does not hold the legal sponsor designation.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host a J-1 Buyer?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Buyer positions at companies that have previously engaged international program participants. Not every employer knows how to complete Form DS-7002 or coordinate with a designated sponsor, so prioritizing those with prior experience saves time during the offer and enrollment stage.
Can I stay in the United States and switch jobs after my J-1 Buyer placement ends?
Your options depend on whether the two-year home-residency requirement applies to you. If it does, you must return to your home country for two years before changing to most other visa statuses or applying for a green card. If it does not apply, you may be able to change status within the United States, subject to standard USCIS requirements.
What documentation does the host employer need to prepare for a J-1 Buyer?
The host employer completes Form DS-7002, the Training Plan, which must outline specific procurement-related objectives organized by phase, typical duration, and learning method. The employer also needs to confirm that the role is not displacing a U.S. worker and, depending on the designated sponsor's requirements, may need to provide proof of E-Verify enrollment before the DS-2019 is issued.
