Verify your credentials meet U.S. standards
The American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics sets the credentialing benchmark U.S. employers recognize. Confirm your foreign credentials align before approaching host sites, since residency programs often require documented clinical hours.
Distinguish Trainee from Specialist category early
The J-1 Trainee category suits early-career prosthetists within five years of graduation. The Specialist category fits seasoned professionals with expertise not widely available in the U.S. Choosing the wrong category can delay your DS-2019 issuance.
Search for J-1 host employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers actively hosting exchange visitors in rehabilitation and clinical settings. Filtering by J-1-compatible roles saves you from targeting employers unfamiliar with the DS-2019 process.
Build a training plan before the offer stage
Designated sponsors require a detailed Training or Internship Placement Plan outlining your learning objectives, supervision structure, and evaluation schedule. Draft this document with your prospective host employer before contacting a sponsor organization to issue your DS-2019.
Check your home-country residency requirement status
Many P and O category J-1 participants face a two-year home-country physical presence requirement after their program ends. Confirm your eligibility for a waiver through DOL or a Interested Government Agency before accepting an offer, since it affects long-term U.S. career plans.
Align your offer letter with DOL prevailing wage
Your host employer's compensation must meet the wage level for your role and location. Cross-check the offered salary against the OFLC Wage Search tool under the relevant Standard Occupational Classification code before countersigning your offer letter.

Find Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist JobsCertified Prosthetist/Orthotist J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist roles?
Most CP/O professionals qualify under the J-1 Trainee category if they are within five years of completing a prosthetist or orthotist degree program. Those with advanced specialization and substantial post-graduation experience may qualify under the Specialist category instead. The designated sponsor organization, not the host employer, makes the final category determination when issuing the DS-2019.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a CP/O position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or a university-affiliated exchange program. That organization issues the DS-2019 form and monitors program compliance. The hospital, clinic, or prosthetics practice where you work is the host employer, not the sponsor. Understanding this distinction matters when negotiating your offer and training plan.
How do I find host employers open to J-1 exchange visitors in prosthetics and orthotics?
Most clinical employers in this field have limited prior experience with J-1 exchange visitors, so targeting the right sites matters. Use Migrate Mate to search for U.S. employers in rehabilitation, orthotics, and prosthetics settings that have hosted or expressed openness to international exchange candidates, rather than cold-contacting facilities unfamiliar with the DS-2019 process.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to CP/O J-1 participants?
It depends on your home country's exchange visitor skills list and whether your program is government-financed. Many healthcare-adjacent J-1 categories are subject to the two-year home-country physical presence requirement under INA Section 212(e). You should confirm your status directly with the designated sponsor before signing any offer, since the requirement limits your ability to change to H-1B or adjust status without a waiver.
What documents does a designated sponsor need before issuing a DS-2019 for a CP/O trainee?
Sponsors typically require a signed Training or Internship Placement Plan (Form DS-7002) co-authored by you and the host employer, proof of relevant credentials or enrollment, evidence of English proficiency, and health insurance meeting J-1 minimums. The host employer's commitment to adequate supervision by a licensed CP/O is also usually required, since unstructured clinical exposure does not satisfy exchange visitor program goals.
