The Role
We are looking for a Platform Engineering Intern to support our Platform Services organization, which includes cloud operations, networking, and core infrastructure services. This internship is designed for someone with a development background who wants hands-on exposure to how modern platforms are built, operated, and automated across hybrid and cloud environments.
The intern will work closely with senior engineers and leadership on real operational and engineering initiatives (not shadow work) and will gain experience across infrastructure, automation, and application-facing systems.
Key Responsibilities:
What You'll Work On
- Assist with cloud platform operations (primarily AWS/Azure), including resource provisioning, monitoring, and cost visibility
- Build and maintain internal tools, scripts, and utilities using Python or TypeScript to support platform workflows
- Contribute to automation efforts using tools like Terraform, and write supporting code in Python or TypeScript to extend infrastructure capabilities
- Help maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines, deployment workflows, and infrastructure-as-code repositories
- Support networking and connectivity initiatives (VPC/VNet design, routing concepts, firewalls, VPNs, load balancing)
- Work alongside engineers to troubleshoot platform issues across cloud, network, and application layers, using logs, metrics, and custom debugging scripts
- Develop or improve lightweight APIs, CLIs, or dashboards that give the team better visibility into platform health
- Participate in documentation, diagrams, and operational runbooks to support platform reliability
- Gain exposure to security, identity, and governance controls within enterprise environments
What You'll Gain
- Real-world experience writing code that supports enterprise-scale platforms
- Mentorship from senior cloud, network, and platform engineers
- Practical development skills applied to infrastructure and automation challenges
- Exposure to how platform decisions support business outcomes
- A strong foundation for roles in cloud engineering, SRE, DevOps, platform engineering, or infrastructure development
Requirements
What We're Looking For
- Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field
- Proficiency in Python or TypeScript — you should be comfortable writing, debugging, and testing code in at least one of these languages
- Foundational understanding of cloud computing concepts and how applications run on infrastructure
- Familiarity with web technologies (REST APIs, basic frontend/backend concepts, HTTP)
- Experience with or willingness to learn version control using Git
- Curiosity about how systems work end-to-end — from user request to infrastructure response
- Strong problem-solving mindset and willingness to learn in a production environment
- Ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical team members
Nice to Have (Not Required)
- Exposure to AWS or Azure services
- Experience with Terraform, Docker, or Kubernetes
- Basic understanding of networking fundamentals (DNS, TCP/IP, routing, firewalls)
- Familiarity with building or consuming REST APIs
- Experience with Node.js or common Python frameworks (Flask, FastAPI)
- Personal projects, labs, or GitHub repositories demonstrating hands-on learning

Align your training plan to cloud engineering
Your DS-2019 requires a detailed training plan specifying skills you'll develop, not just your job title. Map it to measurable cloud competencies like infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD pipeline management, or Kubernetes orchestration so the designated sponsor can approve it without revision cycles.
Target host employers with active cloud infrastructure teams
J-1 host employers don't file petitions with USCIS, but they do sign your training agreement and accept supervisory responsibility. Prioritize engineering-led companies with dedicated platform or site-reliability teams, since they're most equipped to fulfill structured training obligations.
Search for J-1-friendly cloud roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. employers and open positions that align with J-1 sponsorship pathways for technical roles. It surfaces cloud engineering opportunities where employers have experience hosting international exchange visitors in engineering programs.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement early
Some J-1 participants in government-funded or skills-list programs must return home for two years before switching to H-1B or a green card. Confirm with your designated sponsor whether your cloud engineering training plan triggers this requirement before accepting an offer.
Verify your host employer can meet DOL wage standards
Although the J-1 isn't subject to prevailing-wage certification through PERM, host employers must pay you comparably to U.S. workers in the same role. Use the OFLC Wage Search to benchmark Cloud Platform Engineer wages in your target city before negotiating your training stipend.
Document your prior cloud experience for the training plan
Designated sponsors assess whether your existing skills justify the proposed training level. Compile evidence of hands-on cloud experience, certifications like AWS or Google Cloud, and GitHub contributions to demonstrate you're ready for advanced-level J-1 Trainee placement, not just entry-level Intern classification.

Find Cloud Platform Engineer JobsCloud Platform Engineer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Cloud Platform Engineer role?
It depends on your career stage. Current students or recent graduates within 12 months of completing a degree typically qualify under the Intern category. Working professionals with a degree plus at least one year of related experience qualify under the Trainee category. Cloud Platform Engineer roles generally fit the Information Technology and Communications field group recognized by designated sponsors under both categories.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa if an employer hires me as a Cloud Platform Engineer?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as IIE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT, not your employer. The hiring company is your host organization. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, reviews and approves your training plan, and monitors your program compliance throughout your stay. Your employer signs the training agreement but holds no sponsoring authority with the State Department.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host J-1 Cloud Platform Engineers?
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers and cloud engineering roles that align with J-1 exchange visitor programs. Not every employer understands the host-company obligations involved, so targeting companies familiar with the process reduces delays. Focus on employers with established engineering programs and international hiring experience, since they're more likely to complete the training agreement and cooperate with your designated sponsor.
Can a J-1 Trainee work on production cloud infrastructure, or is the role limited to observation?
J-1 Trainee placements can involve hands-on technical work, including production responsibilities, as long as the tasks are structured as a training experience and documented in your training plan. Pure production engineering with no developmental component can draw scrutiny from your designated sponsor during compliance reviews. Your training plan should describe what new skills you're acquiring, not just replicate a standard full-time job description.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to J-1 Cloud Platform Engineers?
Possibly. The two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e) applies if your J-1 program was government-funded, if your home country appears on the State Department skills list, or if your designated sponsor's program is government-financed. Cloud and IT skills appear on many countries' skills lists. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before your program begins, since this requirement affects your ability to change to H-1B or immigrant status later.
