Build a portfolio before approaching host employers
U.S. host employers reviewing J-1 Trainee applicants want evidence of deployed projects, not just coursework. Include live URLs, GitHub repositories, and stack documentation so hiring managers can verify your full-stack scope independently.
Confirm your program category matches your status
If you're currently enrolled in a degree program, the Intern category applies. If you've graduated within the past 12 months, you qualify under Trainee instead. Applying under the wrong category delays DS-2019 issuance and can trigger a redesignation request.
Verify the host employer supports a training plan
Designated sponsors like CIEE or Cultural Vistas require host employers to co-sign a detailed training plan listing technologies, mentors, and learning objectives. Confirm your prospective employer has completed this before accepting an offer, since many tech startups haven't done it before.
Use Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned engineering roles
Filter by employers with J-1 hosting history rather than cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with the DS-2019 process. Migrate Mate surfaces Full Stack Web Engineer positions at organizations already set up to receive exchange visitors.
Check whether the 2-year home residency requirement applies
If your country appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List or your program is government-funded, the 2-year home residency requirement under INA 212(e) applies before you can switch to H-1B or a green card. Confirm your funding source and nationality with USCIS before accepting a role.
Request written confirmation of wage compliance before signing
Your host employer must pay you at least the prevailing wage for your role and location. Cross-reference the offered salary against the OFLC Wage Search using your SOC code before finalizing your training plan to avoid a wage-compliance issue during the sponsor's audit.

Find Full Stack Web Engineer JobsFull Stack Web Engineer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Full Stack Web Engineer role?
It depends on your current academic status. If you're enrolled in a degree program and the position is directly related to your field of study, the Intern category applies. If you've graduated and are early in your professional career, generally within 12 months of completing your degree, the Trainee category is the correct designation. Both require a formally approved training plan and a DS-2019 issued by a State Department-designated sponsor.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa, the employer or someone else?
Your J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as IIE, CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT, not your employer. The sponsor issues your DS-2019, monitors program compliance, and signs off on your training plan. The company where you write code and ship features is your host employer, a separate and legally distinct role from the designated sponsor.
How do I find Full Stack Web Engineer positions where the host employer already knows the J-1 process?
Applying to companies unfamiliar with the DS-2019 or training plan requirements dramatically slows the process. Migrate Mate lets you filter for engineering roles at employers with established J-1 hosting history, so you're not starting from scratch explaining the program to an HR team that's never encountered it before.
Does a Full Stack Web Engineer on J-1 face the 2-year home residency requirement?
Not automatically. The 2-year home country physical presence requirement under INA 212(e) applies if your J-1 program is government-funded, if your country is on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, or if your program is in a field appearing on that list. Software engineering roles funded by private employers are often exempt, but you should verify your specific situation through USCIS before planning any H-1B or immigrant visa transition.
Can I extend my J-1 Trainee status if my full-stack project runs longer than planned?
Trainee status under the J-1 has a maximum duration of 18 months, and extensions must be approved by your designated sponsor before your current DS-2019 expires. The sponsor reviews whether the extension serves a genuine training objective, not just continued employment. You'll need an updated training plan documenting the additional skills or technologies you'll be learning during the extended period.
