Frame your training plan around measurable goals
Designated sponsors require a signed Training/Internship Placement Plan before issuing your DS-2019. Document specific field operations competencies you'll develop each month, such as logistics coordination, inventory management, or site scheduling, so the plan satisfies DOL program requirements.
Search Migrate Mate for J-1-aligned coordination roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter Field Operations Coordinator openings by employers familiar with exchange visitor hosting. Targeting hosts with prior J-1 experience shortens the onboarding conversation and reduces the risk of a host withdrawing after offer.
Verify your program category matches your career stage
If you're a current student completing a practicum, the Intern category applies. If you've graduated and have relevant field work experience, you qualify as a Trainee. Applying under the wrong category causes DS-2019 rejection, so confirm your status before your host contacts a designated sponsor.
Prepare credentials that translate for U.S. operations roles
U.S. host employers reviewing Field Operations Coordinator applicants look for documented experience with scheduling systems, vendor coordination, or supply chain workflows. Translate foreign job titles and responsibilities into U.S.-standard terminology on your resume before outreach.
Confirm the host understands its compliance obligations
The host employer is responsible for providing the actual training environment and cooperating with designated sponsor evaluations. Ask prospective hosts directly whether they've hosted J-1 Trainees before and whether they're prepared to complete the required 30-day and end-of-program evaluations.
Clarify the two-year home residency rule before accepting an offer
Some Field Operations Coordinator positions, particularly those funded by a foreign government or in fields on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, trigger the two-year home residency requirement under INA 212(e). USCIS adjudicates waivers, but the process takes months, so verify your exposure before signing.

Find Field Operations Coordinator JobsField Operations Coordinator J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Field Operations Coordinator role?
Most Field Operations Coordinator positions fall under the Trainee category, which covers post-degree professionals with at least one year of relevant work experience or a degree plus five months of experience in their field. Current students completing a structured practicum may qualify under the Intern category instead. The designated sponsor, not the host employer, determines which category applies based on your background and the training plan.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for this type of role?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or AIPT, that reviews your training plan, issues the DS-2019 form, and monitors your program compliance. The host employer provides the actual work environment and supervision but is not the legal sponsor. You and the host together apply to a designated sponsor, which then decides whether to authorize your exchange visitor status.
How do I find host employers open to J-1 Field Operations Coordinators?
Migrate Mate lets you search for Field Operations Coordinator openings specifically among employers familiar with J-1 hosting requirements. Because host companies must sign a detailed training plan and cooperate with sponsor evaluations, targeting employers already experienced with exchange visitors significantly increases your chances of receiving and keeping an offer through the DS-2019 issuance process.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect Field Operations Coordinator exchange visitors?
It can. If your home country's government funded your exchange program, if your field appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, or if you received graduate medical training in the U.S., the two-year home residency requirement under INA 212(e) applies. This means you must return home for two years before changing to most other visa categories. Confirm whether your specific situation triggers this requirement with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
What documents do I need before a designated sponsor will issue my DS-2019?
Sponsors typically require a completed Training/Internship Placement Plan signed by you and the host employer, proof of your English proficiency, evidence of your educational credentials and relevant work history, and financial proof showing you can cover living expenses. For Field Operations Coordinator roles, sponsors also look for documentation that the training involves structured skill development rather than ordinary production work, so the more specific your monthly objectives are, the smoother the review.
