Verify your credentials meet specialty requirements
Group fitness certifications from NASM, ACE, or AFAA are widely recognized by U.S. host employers. Confirm your certification body is accredited before approaching a designated sponsor, as incomplete credentials can delay DS-2019 issuance.
Match your J-1 category to your career stage
Current students or recent graduates typically qualify under the Intern category, while working fitness professionals with post-graduation experience qualify as Trainees. Misclassifying your category causes training plan rejections, so verify eligibility criteria with your designated sponsor before applying.
Search Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned host employers
Host fitness facilities don't always advertise J-1 openings publicly. Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. gyms, health clubs, and wellness centers that have hosted international instructors, narrowing your search to organizations with documented sponsorship history.
Build a structured training plan before outreach
Designated sponsors require a detailed DS-7002 Training and Internship Placement Plan before issuing your DS-2019. Draft your phase-by-phase training objectives, class formats, and supervision schedule ahead of time so host employers can review and sign off quickly.
Confirm your host employer can meet supervision obligations
J-1 regulations require your host facility to provide a qualified U.S. supervisor who oversees your training and reports to the designated sponsor. Smaller boutique studios may lack the staffing structure to meet this requirement, so clarify this during your initial conversations with prospective hosts.
Check whether your exchange category triggers the two-year rule
Some J-1 participants are subject to a two-year home residency requirement after program completion, which affects future visa applications. Review your DS-2019 and your country's skill-shortage designations with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.

Find Group Exercise Instructor JobsGroup Exercise Instructor J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers Group Exercise Instructor roles?
Group Exercise Instructor positions typically fall under the Trainee category if you've graduated and have relevant professional experience, or the Intern category if you're currently enrolled or recently completed a degree in exercise science, kinesiology, or a related field. The designated sponsor determines which category applies based on your background and the training plan your host facility submits.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a Group Exercise Instructor?
Your visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your fitness facility or gym. The designated sponsor, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, reviews your training plan, issues the DS-2019 form, and monitors your program compliance. Your host employer is the facility where you train and teach classes, but they are not your visa sponsor in the legal sense.
How do I find U.S. gyms and fitness centers willing to host J-1 instructors?
Most host facilities don't post J-1 openings on general job boards. Migrate Mate lets you search for U.S. employers in fitness and wellness that have a history of hosting international workers, helping you target outreach to organizations already familiar with the hosting requirements. Reaching out with a ready DS-7002 training plan draft significantly improves your response rate.
Can I teach group fitness classes independently or only under supervision?
Under the J-1 Trainee or Intern program, you must operate under the oversight of a qualified U.S. supervisor at your host facility throughout your program. Independent instruction or self-employment is not permitted. Your designated sponsor reviews your supervision structure as part of approving the training plan, so your host facility must confirm a named supervisor before your DS-2019 is issued.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to Group Exercise Instructors?
It depends on your country of nationality and whether group fitness instruction appears on your home country's exchange visitor skills list. If the requirement applies, you must return home for two years after your J-1 program before applying for an H-1B, L-1, or immigrant visa. Your designated sponsor can review your DS-2019 and confirm whether the requirement applies to your specific situation.
