Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Merchandising Manager
Translate your credentials into U.S. merchandising terms
Reframe your buying cycle experience, planogram execution, and sell-through analysis using terminology that U.S. retail employers recognize. Host employers evaluate whether your background maps to their internal merchandising frameworks before agreeing to coordinate with a J-1 sponsor.
Identify host employers with J-1 training plan capacity
Retail chains and wholesale distributors already partnered with State Department-designated sponsors can move faster because they've signed DS-7002 training plans before. Use Migrate Mate to find Merchandising Manager roles at employers with documented J-1 hosting history.
Clarify which J-1 category fits your career stage
The Trainee category fits professionals with a degree plus one year of relevant experience or five years of work experience without a degree. The Specialist category applies if you have significant expertise in a defined merchandising specialty. Choosing the wrong category delays your DS-2019 issuance.
Build a structured training objective for the DS-7002
The DS-7002 training plan must show progressive skill development, not just job duties. Draft phase-by-phase objectives covering category management, supplier negotiation, and inventory forecasting before your host employer submits to a designated sponsor like Cultural Vistas or AIPT.
Ask about the two-year home residency requirement upfront
If your country of most recent residence is listed under a bilateral agreement or your position receives U.S. government funding, you may be subject to the two-year home country return requirement under INA 212(e). Clarify this with your designated sponsor before signing an offer letter.
Confirm your host employer's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
Some designated sponsors require host employers to be enrolled in E-Verify as part of their compliance standards. Confirming enrollment status before you accept an offer prevents delays after your DS-2019 is issued and your program start date is set.

Find Merchandising Manager JobsMerchandising Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Merchandising Manager role?
Most Merchandising Manager applicants qualify under the Trainee category if they hold a degree in business, marketing, or a related field and have at least one year of merchandising experience, or have five or more years of work experience without a degree. The Specialist category may apply if your expertise is highly defined, such as visual merchandising or retail category analytics, and your program focuses on that specialty exclusively.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Merchandising Manager position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or IIE, not the retail or wholesale employer you're working for. The employer serves as your host organization and must agree to supervise your training plan. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019 form, monitors compliance, and is your official point of contact with the State Department throughout the program.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host a J-1 Merchandising Manager?
Search for Merchandising Manager roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces positions at U.S. employers open to international professionals and J-1 program structures. Not all employers advertise J-1 hosting willingness publicly, so targeting companies that have hosted international exchange visitors previously gives you a practical advantage in outreach and negotiations.
What goes into the training plan for a Merchandising Manager J-1 program?
The DS-7002 training plan must outline phase-by-phase learning objectives tied to specific merchandising competencies, such as open-to-buy planning, planogram development, vendor performance analysis, and seasonal assortment strategy. Generic job descriptions are rejected. The plan must demonstrate progressive skill transfer that you cannot receive in your home country, and both you and your host employer supervisor must sign it before your designated sponsor submits it to the State Department.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to Merchandising Manager roles?
It depends on your country of most recent residence and how your program is funded. If you're a national of a country listed in the Exchange Visitor Skills List, or if your J-1 program receives U.S. government funding, the two-year home country requirement under INA 212(e) likely applies. This means you'd need to return home for two years before adjusting status or applying for an H-1B or immigrant visa. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before accepting a host employer offer.
