VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MUSIC – CHOIR
(Spring Semester Sabbatical Replacement, part-time)
Luther College seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music to contribute to our commitment to academic excellence in teaching for a temporary, one-semester position to begin Spring 2027. We seek candidates with the ability and interest in teaching the equivalent of three courses (a full-time semester teaching load). Primary teaching responsibilities include conducting Cathedral Choir (second-year mixed ensemble), Norskkor (first-year tenor/bass ensemble), and two sections of an introductory music education course for first-year students. These courses serve students in our music, music education, musical theatre, and general education programs. While we prefer to hire a single, full-time instructor to conduct both choirs and teach the music education courses, we will consider hiring two part-time instructors.
Candidates with broad experience in conducting and teaching in a variety of musical styles are particularly encouraged to apply.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants should hold a doctorate degree (assistant professor rank) or a master’s degree (instructor rank) in music and have experience as an instructor in a public education setting. Demonstrated excellence as a choral director is required. The successful candidate will communicate knowledge of and interest in teaching at Luther College. Candidates should demonstrate potential for excellence in college teaching and effectiveness in mentoring undergraduates.
LOCATION
Luther College is located in rural Northeast Iowa, a regional hub for outdoor recreation in the vibrant and scenic Driftless region, containing two nationally recognized healthcare systems, top ranked schools, business, agriculture, specialty retail, dining and tourism. Major Midwest metropolitan areas within a three-hour driving distance include Des Moines, IA; Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN; and Madison, WI. We are an easy drive to La Crosse, WI, Cedar Falls/Waterloo, IA, and Rochester, MN, home of Mayo Clinic.
At Luther College, inclusion and belonging are central to our educational mission and values. We are committed to the institutional change required for visioning and realizing a more equitable and socially just college and society. Strong candidates will have experience and vision regarding teaching and mentorship of students of multiple and diverse backgrounds with attention to structural barriers that limit access to educational opportunities. As a liberal arts college, all Luther College music faculty routinely teach music and music education majors as well as non-majors.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
For full consideration, applications should be received by May 6, 2026, though the position remains open until filled. Apply for this position at https://www.luther.edu/offices/hr/careers. Applicants’ dossier should include:
- Cover letter, describing your interest in the position at Luther College as articulated in this position description and documenting your training and experience appropriate to the position.
- Curriculum vitae, highlighting your performing and teaching experience.
- Teaching statement, including how you would approach teaching students from a variety of majors and backgrounds, your experience in, commitment to, and vision for inclusion and belonging through your work and student engagement, and how your teaching would contribute to a liberal arts education.
- Unofficial graduate and undergraduate transcripts.
- Contact information for three references (name, affiliation, email and phone). References will only be contacted for those candidates invited for a campus visit with prior notification to the candidate.
COMPENSATION
The current salary range for assistant professors with 0-5 years of experience is $26,350–$29,250; placement on scale is dependent on credentials and applicable experience. Inquiries about the position may be directed to Mark Potvin, Search Chair, Dept. of Music, Luther College, 700 College Drive, Decorah, Iowa 52101; phone: 563-387-2219; email: potvin@luther.edu. Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Music Director
Document your conducting credentials precisely
J-1 Specialist category requires demonstrable expertise in your field. Gather formal documentation of podium experience, ensemble leadership, conservatory training, and any prizes or residencies that establish you as a recognized music professional, not just an applicant.
Target host organizations with DS-2019 experience
Orchestras, opera companies, and conservatories vary widely in J-1 host familiarity. Prioritize organizations that have previously hosted international musicians on J-1 status, since they already understand their obligations to the designated sponsor overseeing your DS-2019.
Clarify the home residency requirement early
Many Music Director roles involve government or arts-funding connections that trigger the J-1 two-year home residency requirement. Confirm with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer whether your program category and funding source activate this condition.
Use Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned roles
Searching broadly for conducting roles wastes time on employers unfamiliar with J-1 host obligations. Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. performing arts organizations and music institutions that have demonstrated openness to international exchange visitors in director-level roles.
Align your training plan with the Specialist category
Your designated sponsor requires a structured training plan outlining your objectives as a Music Director exchange visitor. Work with your host organization to draft this before the DS-2019 is issued, mapping artistic goals to measurable professional development outcomes.
Negotiate program duration before the offer is finalized
J-1 Specialist programs run up to one year, with a possible one-year extension. If your Music Director engagement spans multiple seasons, confirm the extension pathway with your designated sponsor before signing any contract with the host organization.

Find Music Director JobsMusic Director J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Music Director role?
Most Music Directors qualify under the J-1 Specialist category, which is designed for internationally recognized experts in fields including the performing arts. If you are affiliated with a university or research institution in a scholarly capacity, the Research Scholar category may apply instead. Your designated sponsor organization determines which category fits based on your host organization type, professional background, and program objectives.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Music Director position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization such as Cultural Vistas or IIE, not the orchestra or conservatory hiring you. The hiring organization is your host employer and is responsible for funding your position and providing the work environment. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, monitors program compliance, and serves as the official point of contact with the State Department throughout your exchange.
How can I find U.S. performing arts organizations open to J-1 Music Directors?
Migrate Mate lets you filter for U.S. employers and performing arts organizations that have shown openness to international exchange visitors in senior artistic roles, saving you time compared to cold-applying to institutions unfamiliar with J-1 host obligations. Identifying hosts who already understand the DS-2019 process and designated sponsor relationship gives your application a much stronger foundation from the start.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to Music Directors on J-1 status?
It depends on your funding source and nationality. If your program is funded by your home government or a U.S. government agency, or if your home country has designated your field as in shortage of skills, the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e) is likely triggered. Your designated sponsor will assess this before issuing your DS-2019, and you should confirm the outcome before accepting a multi-season conducting engagement.
Can a Music Director on J-1 status extend their program or change host organizations mid-program?
J-1 Specialist programs allow one extension of up to 12 months beyond the initial program period, subject to designated sponsor approval and continued eligibility. Changing host organizations mid-program is possible but requires your designated sponsor to amend or reissue the DS-2019 to reflect the new host. Any gap between host engagements can jeopardize your J-1 status, so coordinate the transition with your sponsor before leaving your current position.
