What Product Management Is Like At Gusto
Our Product team is lean, which means you’ll have a high degree of impact and ownership. We believe in smaller, empowered teams that move quickly with less overhead. You’ll move fast by pairing sharp product judgment with fluency in AI tools — automating what slows teams down and amplifying what makes them creative and high-performing.
We’re boundaryless builders. Lines between roles are intentionally blurred, and our PMs do whatever it takes to deliver outcomes. You’ll prototype, automate, design, and ship — using AI as your co-builder to turn problems into durable solutions that deliver customer value with urgency and care.
We’re here to serve small and medium businesses. Gusto has a strong mission-driven culture, and we care deeply about lifting up these business owners — building technology for an AI-first world that gives them the superpowers to run and grow their businesses with confidence.
We’re comfortable with change. Our environment moves fast, and PMs here thrive in ambiguity — blending curiosity, experimentation, and AI-native craft to shape how products (and work itself) are built at Gusto.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a New Product Development Manager
Align your training plan with NPD methodologies
Your DS-2019 training plan must describe structured learning objectives, not just job duties. Document specific NPD frameworks you'll apply, such as Stage-Gate or Agile product development, so the designated sponsor can justify the program's training value.
Verify your field experience meets Trainee thresholds
The J-1 Trainee category requires either a relevant degree plus one year of experience abroad, or five years of work experience in your field. Gather employment records and transcripts before approaching any host employer or designated sponsor.
Target host employers with cross-functional NPD teams
Companies running dedicated product development pipelines, R&D divisions, or innovation labs are better positioned to fulfill the structured training requirement. Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers whose roles align with J-1 Trainee program criteria for product and innovation management.
Confirm the host employer will sign the training plan
The host employer, not the designated sponsor, is responsible for supervising your training objectives and co-signing the training plan. Clarify this commitment during early interviews, since many employers confuse hosting obligations with full visa sponsorship responsibilities.
Check whether your role triggers the two-year home residency requirement
J-1 participants funded by their home government or whose skills appear on the Exchange Visitor Skills List may face a two-year home residency requirement before switching to H-1B or permanent residence. USCIS and the State Department both assess this on a case-by-case basis.
Prepare a portfolio demonstrating measurable product outcomes
Designated sponsors evaluate whether your prior experience substantiates the proposed training program. Document launched products, cross-functional leadership, or market entry results with metrics, since vague credentials create delays when the sponsor reviews your DS-2019 application.

Find New Product Development Manager JobsNew Product Development Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to New Product Development Manager roles?
Most New Product Development Managers qualify under the J-1 Trainee category, which covers professionals gaining practical experience in their field outside their home country. If your role is research-intensive at a university or research institution, the Research Scholar category may apply instead. The Specialist category is also possible for highly experienced professionals in a niche discipline, but Trainee is the most common fit for industry-based product management roles.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for this type of role?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT, that issues your DS-2019 form and monitors program compliance. The company where you work is the host employer, not the visa sponsor. You need both: a host employer willing to supervise your training plan and a designated sponsor organization approved to administer the Trainee program.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 New Product Development Manager?
Use Migrate Mate to search for New Product Development Manager roles at U.S. companies that are familiar with J-1 hosting arrangements. Because J-1 hosting requires the employer to commit to a structured training plan and cooperate with the designated sponsor, targeting employers who already have experience with exchange visitor programs significantly reduces friction during the offer process.
Can I transition from J-1 Trainee status to an H-1B after my program ends?
Transitioning from J-1 to H-1B is possible, but only if you don't carry a two-year home residency requirement. J-1 participants whose participation was funded by a home-country government, or whose skills appear on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, must return home for two years first or obtain a waiver. USCIS evaluates each case individually, so confirm your requirement status early in the process.
What documentation does the designated sponsor need to approve a New Product Development Manager training plan?
Designated sponsors typically require a completed DS-7002 training plan form, a formal offer letter from the host employer, evidence of your prior education and work experience in product development, and confirmation that the host employer will provide direct supervision. The training plan must describe specific skills and activities you'll engage in, not just your job title, and it must demonstrate that the experience isn't available in your home country.
