Align your portfolio with J-1 training plans
Your DS-2019 requires a formal training plan tied to measurable learning objectives. Document Power BI projects by phase, tool, and business outcome so your portfolio maps directly onto the structured training format sponsors require.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee category eligibility
Intern category applies if you're currently enrolled in a degree program. Trainee applies if you've graduated within the past year or have five years of relevant BI experience. Applying under the wrong category delays or voids your DS-2019 issuance.
Target host employers with existing sponsor relationships
Find Power BI Developer roles at companies already working with a State Department-designated sponsor. Use Migrate Mate to filter positions by J-1 sponsorship alignment, which surfaces host employers familiar with the DS-2019 process.
Verify your role qualifies under O*NET
Sponsors validate that your placement matches a recognized occupational profile. Confirm your Power BI Developer job duties align with the O*NET definition for database and business intelligence roles before your sponsor submits training plan documentation.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement early
Some J-1 participants in technology training categories are subject to a two-year home-country residency requirement after their program ends. Confirm your eligibility for a waiver with your designated sponsor before accepting a host employer offer.
Request your host employer document supervision structure
Sponsors require proof that your host employer provides qualified on-site supervision throughout the training period. Ask the hiring manager to specify your direct supervisor's credentials and reporting structure before your training plan is finalized and submitted.

Find Power Bi Developer JobsPower Bi Developer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Power BI Developer role?
Most Power BI Developer placements fall under the Trainee category, which covers early-career professionals with a relevant degree and at least one year of post-graduation experience, or five or more years of BI-related work history. If you're currently enrolled in a degree program, the Intern category applies instead. The host employer's training plan must reflect hands-on development work, not routine production tasks.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a Power BI Developer?
Your visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. Organizations such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, and AIPT issue the DS-2019 form, monitor your compliance, and serve as your official program sponsor throughout the placement. Your hiring company is the host employer. The host provides the work environment and training plan, but cannot issue a DS-2019 independently.
How do I find host employers open to J-1 placements for data roles?
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers actively recruiting for Power BI and business intelligence roles with J-1 sponsorship alignment. Many companies that hire in data and analytics already work with designated sponsors on structured training programs, but that relationship isn't always visible on standard job boards. Filtering for J-1-compatible roles saves significant time in your outreach.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to Power BI Developers on J-1?
It depends on your country of nationality and whether your field appears on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List, or whether your program was government-financed. Technology and data fields are sometimes listed for certain countries. Confirm your situation with your designated sponsor before accepting a host employer offer, since the requirement affects your ability to change to H-1B or other work statuses afterward.
What does the host employer need to provide for my J-1 training plan?
Your host employer must document a detailed training plan specifying the phases of your Power BI development work, the tools and technologies you'll use, measurable learning objectives for each phase, and the name and qualifications of your on-site supervisor. The designated sponsor reviews this plan before issuing the DS-2019. Vague descriptions such as 'assist with reporting tasks' are typically rejected, so work with your employer to provide project-level specificity.
