Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Pre-K Special Education Teacher
Verify your teaching credentials transfer correctly
Most designated sponsors require a valid teaching license from your home country plus a bachelor's degree in education or a related field. Credential evaluation services can translate foreign qualifications into U.S.-equivalent terms before you apply.
Target public school districts with recurring J-1 partnerships
Public districts in states with chronic special education shortages, including rural and high-need urban areas, are more likely to host J-1 Teacher category participants. Search Migrate Mate to find Pre-K roles at districts with active exchange visitor hiring history.
Confirm your host school meets program site standards
The designated sponsor, not USCIS, approves host school eligibility. Your host site must demonstrate need, provide direct classroom placement, and meet state licensing standards. Confirm this before signing any employment agreement.
Negotiate your training plan before the DS-2019 is issued
Your designated sponsor requires a signed training plan outlining your teaching objectives, supervision structure, and evaluation schedule. Gaps in IEP supervision requirements or early childhood special education duties can delay DS-2019 issuance, so resolve them with your host school first.
Clarify ESA and IEP compliance expectations with your host
Pre-K special education roles involve federally mandated IEP processes under IDEA. Ask your host district whether J-1 teachers of record are expected to serve as the IEP team lead or in a supporting capacity, since this affects licensure and supervision requirements in your training plan.

Find Pre-K Special Education Teacher JobsPre-K Special Education Teacher J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers Pre-K special education teachers?
The Teacher category is the correct J-1 classification for Pre-K special education teachers. It applies to educators who hold a teaching credential in their home country and are placed at an accredited host school in the United States. The Exchange Visitor program in this category is designed for classroom-based instruction, not research or training in a non-school setting.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa, the school or a separate organization?
The school is your host employer, not your sponsor. A U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization, such as CIEE or Cultural Vistas, issues your DS-2019 form, monitors your program compliance, and maintains the official exchange visitor record. Your host school provides the teaching placement but cannot sponsor a J-1 visa independently.
Does the J-1 Teacher category carry a home residency requirement?
Yes. Most J-1 Teacher category participants are subject to a two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e). This means after your exchange program ends, you must reside in your home country for two years before you can change to H-1B status, apply for a green card, or obtain certain other nonimmigrant visas. A waiver is possible but involves a separate federal process.
How do I find Pre-K schools that are open to hosting J-1 teachers?
Host site selection is one of the hardest parts of the J-1 Teacher process because not every school is familiar with the exchange visitor program structure. Use Migrate Mate to search for Pre-K and early childhood special education roles at schools and districts that have hosted J-1 participants, which helps you avoid starting conversations with employers unfamiliar with the DS-2019 process.
Can I supervise IEPs and serve as teacher of record on a J-1 visa?
It depends on your state's licensing requirements and your host district's policies. Some states allow J-1 Teacher category participants to serve as teacher of record with a temporary or provisional license, while others require full state licensure first. Your designated sponsor's training plan must accurately reflect your actual classroom responsibilities, so clarify IEP and teacher-of-record duties with your host school before your DS-2019 is finalized.
