Match your credentials to licensure requirements
Most U.S. states require a master's degree in social work plus state licensure for school social workers. Confirm your foreign credentials are evaluated by a NACES-approved service before applying, as host employers will request this documentation upfront.
Identify whether Specialist or Trainee fits your stage
Recent graduates with limited post-degree experience qualify under the J-1 Trainee category. Established practitioners with five or more years of professional experience are better positioned for the Specialist category, which allows a longer program duration.
Target districts with established international hiring patterns
Public school districts in states with active bilingual education programs, such as California, Texas, and New York, are more accustomed to hosting J-1 exchange visitors. Search for host employers by role and location using Migrate Mate to surface J-1-aligned openings.
Verify host employer eligibility before accepting an offer
Your host employer must sign a formal training plan or placement agreement with your designated sponsor organization. Confirm the district or agency has hosted J-1 exchange visitors before, since a first-time host adds administrative lead time to the DS-2019 issuance process.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement early
School Social Worker roles funded by U.S. government sources or involving skills on the Exchange Visitor Skills List may trigger the J-1 two-year home residency requirement. Clarify this with your designated sponsor before signing an offer, as a waiver requires separate DOL review.
Build your DS-2019 timeline around state licensing delays
State social work licensing boards often take 60 to 120 days to process foreign-educated applicants. Start the licensing application before your sponsor issues the DS-2019, so the two processes run in parallel and your program start date isn't delayed by a slow licensing review.

Find School Social Worker JobsSchool Social Worker J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to school social workers?
It depends on your career stage. If you completed your master's degree within the past 12 months and are in the early phase of your career, the J-1 Trainee category typically applies. If you have five or more years of post-degree professional experience, the Specialist category is the standard fit. The school district acts as your host employer, while a U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization issues your DS-2019 and administers the program.
How is J-1 sponsorship different from employer visa sponsorship for this role?
With J-1, the visa sponsor is a State Department-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or CIEE, not the school district or nonprofit hiring you. The employer is your host, not your visa sponsor. The designated sponsor issues the DS-2019 form, approves your training plan, and monitors compliance throughout your exchange program. The host employer funds your position but does not file any visa petition on your behalf.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to school social workers?
It can. The two-year home residency requirement applies when your J-1 program is funded by your home or host government, or when your occupation appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List. Social work is listed for several countries. If the requirement applies, you must return home for two years before changing to most other U.S. visa categories, or pursue a waiver through DOL or a U.S. federal agency.
How do I find U.S. school districts or nonprofits that host J-1 exchange visitors?
Use Migrate Mate to search for school social worker roles posted by employers familiar with exchange visitor placements. Not every district advertises J-1 compatibility, so filtering by role type and location is more effective than searching by visa label alone. Districts in states with large bilingual student populations tend to have more institutional experience with international hires and J-1 program logistics.
Can I transition from J-1 to a long-term work visa after my placement ends?
Yes, but timing matters. If the two-year home residency requirement applies to your J-1, you must fulfill it or obtain a waiver before changing to H-1B, O-1, or most immigrant visa categories. If the requirement does not apply, you can pursue a change of status or consular processing directly. Confirm your requirement status with your designated sponsor organization as early as possible, not at the end of your program.
