Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Pre-K Teacher
Verify your teaching credentials transfer
Most designated sponsors require proof of a valid teaching license or equivalent certification from your home country. Get your credentials evaluated by a recognized foreign credential evaluation service before applying, since sponsors won't process your DS-2019 without confirmed equivalency.
Target public school districts with exchange history
Identify districts that have previously hosted J-1 teachers in early childhood roles by searching state education department directories. Districts experienced with the Teacher category already have the host agreements and compliance processes in place, which shortens your onboarding timeline.
Search for J-1 host employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find Pre-K Teacher roles at U.S. schools and early childhood programs that align with J-1 sponsorship requirements. Filtering by role and location narrows your search to hosts familiar with the exchange visitor process.
Confirm the two-year home residency requirement
The J-1 Teacher category almost always carries the two-year home-country residency requirement under INA Section 212(e). Before accepting a host offer, confirm with your designated sponsor whether a waiver applies to your situation, since this affects any future U.S. visa plans.
Understand who issues your DS-2019
Your host school is not your visa sponsor. A U.S. Department of State-designated organization like CIEE or Cultural Vistas issues your DS-2019 and manages your program compliance. Your offer letter from the host school must be submitted to the designated sponsor before your DS-2019 is issued.
Align your start date with the academic calendar
Designated sponsors for the Teacher category typically require DS-2019 requests at least 60 days before your program start date. Coordinating your offer acceptance with the school's hiring cycle and the sponsor's processing window prevents gaps that could delay your visa interview.

Find Pre-K Teacher JobsPre-K Teacher J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers Pre-K Teacher roles?
Pre-K Teacher positions fall under the J-1 Teacher category, which is specifically designed for foreign nationals coming to the U.S. to teach full-time at an accredited primary or secondary school. Early childhood and pre-kindergarten programs at accredited institutions qualify. This is distinct from the Intern or Trainee categories, which apply to students and recent graduates in other fields.
Does my host school sponsor my J-1 visa?
No. Your host school is not your visa sponsor under the J-1 program. A U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as CIEE or Cultural Vistas, acts as your official sponsor by issuing your DS-2019 form and monitoring your compliance with program regulations. The host school provides your placement and submits documentation to the designated sponsor, but the sponsor holds legal responsibility for your exchange.
How do I find Pre-K Teacher roles that work with J-1 sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search for U.S. teaching roles and early childhood education positions at employers familiar with J-1 sponsorship requirements. Because not every school district has an existing relationship with a designated sponsor, targeting hosts with prior exchange teacher experience significantly speeds up the process. Filtering by role type and location on Migrate Mate helps you identify those opportunities directly.
Will the two-year home residency requirement affect my plans after teaching?
Most J-1 Teacher participants are subject to the two-year home-country residency requirement under Section 212(e) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This means you must return to your home country for two years before applying for an H-1B, L-1, or immigrant visa. Some participants qualify for a waiver, but your designated sponsor can advise on eligibility based on your specific country and funding situation.
What documents do I need before a designated sponsor will issue my DS-2019?
Designated sponsors typically require a signed offer letter from your host school, proof of a valid home-country teaching license or equivalent certification, a foreign credential evaluation confirming your degree meets U.S. standards, and evidence of English proficiency if your instruction language differs. Processing your DS-2019 application at least 60 days before your intended start date gives the sponsor adequate time to review and issue your form.
