Verify your teaching credentials meet state requirements
Each U.S. state sets its own licensure standards. Research whether your home-country teaching qualification is recognized in the state where you're applying before you contact any host school, since credential gaps can delay or disqualify your placement.
Target Title I schools actively seeking international educators
The J-1 Teacher program is structured around underserved communities, so district HR offices at high-need schools are your most direct point of contact. Search specifically for districts that have hosted J-1 teachers before, as they already understand the DS-2019 process.
Search J-1 Teacher roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter for Middle School Teacher openings at U.S. host schools that align with J-1 sponsorship. The platform surfaces roles by subject area and district type, narrowing your search to employers already familiar with exchange visitor placements.
Document your subject-area teaching hours precisely
Your designated sponsor will require evidence that you've taught your subject for at least two of the past eight years. Gather official employment records from your school or ministry of education early, since informal letters from principals rarely satisfy sponsor compliance requirements.
Confirm the designated sponsor before accepting an offer
Your host school arranges the placement, but a separate U.S. Department of State-designated organization issues your DS-2019 and holds legal sponsorship responsibility. Before signing any contract, confirm which designated sponsor the district works with and that they are currently authorized to issue DS-2019 forms.
Plan around the two-year home residency requirement
The J-1 Teacher program carries a two-year home residency requirement for most participants, meaning you must return to your home country for two years before applying for H-1B, L-1, or immigrant visas. Factor this into your long-term career plan before accepting a placement.

Find Middle School Teacher JobsMiddle School Teacher J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers Middle School Teacher positions?
Middle School Teacher roles fall under the J-1 Teacher program category, which is distinct from Intern, Trainee, or Research Scholar categories. This category is specifically designed for qualified foreign teachers placed at U.S. primary and secondary schools, including middle schools, typically in subject areas with critical shortages such as math, science, and special education.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa if the school is the host?
The hiring school acts as your host organization, not your visa sponsor. A separate U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization issues your DS-2019 form, monitors your program compliance, and holds legal responsibility under exchange visitor regulations. The host school and the designated sponsor have distinct roles, and both relationships need to be in place before you can obtain your J-1 visa.
How do I find Middle School Teacher roles that align with J-1 sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search for U.S. Middle School Teacher openings filtered by J-1 compatibility, helping you identify host schools and districts that already understand the exchange visitor process. Direct outreach to district HR departments in states with active J-1 Teacher programs is also effective, particularly for math, science, and special education vacancies.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to J-1 teachers?
Yes, the J-1 Teacher program carries a two-year home residency requirement for most participants. This means after your program ends you must reside in your home country for two years before you can change status to H-1B, L-1, or apply for most immigrant visas inside the United States. A waiver is possible under certain circumstances but requires a separate application process.
What subject areas do U.S. schools typically hire J-1 teachers for?
Most J-1 Teacher placements at the middle school level target shortage subject areas designated by state education agencies, most commonly mathematics, science, special education, and foreign languages. Districts with Title I funding and high-need classifications are the most active hosts. Your teaching experience must cover the specific subject area for at least two of the past eight years to satisfy program eligibility requirements.
