Align your SOC code before applying
Pricing Actuary roles fall under SOC 15-2011 in O*NET. Confirm your training plan references this code explicitly, since mismatched occupation codes are a common reason designated sponsors flag DS-2019 applications for revision.
Document your actuarial credentials precisely
Compile your actuarial exam transcripts, passed CAS or SOA exam records, and any employer verification letters before approaching a designated sponsor. Sponsors require written evidence that your background matches the actuarial training program described in your DS-7002 plan.
Target host employers with active training programs
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. insurance carriers, consulting firms, and reinsurers that have posted Pricing Actuary roles compatible with J-1 exchange visitor placements, so you're approaching employers already familiar with hosting international trainees.
Clarify the two-year home residency rule upfront
Pricing Actuary trainees sponsored by government funding or with skills on the Exchange Visitor Skills List may face a two-year home-country residency requirement after their program ends. Ask your designated sponsor whether your specific funding source or nationality triggers this condition before signing your training plan.
Structure your DS-7002 around actuarial pricing tasks
The DS-7002 training plan must map specific actuarial tasks, such as loss ratio analysis, rate filings, and reserving methodology, to monthly milestones. Generic descriptions like 'actuarial support' are rejected by OFLC compliance reviewers and will delay your DS-2019 issuance.
Verify prevailing wage before accepting a host offer
Cross-check your offered compensation against the OFLC Wage Search for actuarial roles in your host employer's metropolitan area. J-1 host employers must pay the prevailing wage for the occupation, and Bureau of Labor Statistics data is the benchmark sponsors use during compliance audits.

Find Pricing Actuary JobsPricing Actuary J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Pricing Actuary placement?
Most Pricing Actuary placements fall under the J-1 Trainee category if you're within five years of graduation or have relevant work experience outside the U.S. If your role is research-focused, such as developing new pricing models at a university-affiliated institute, the Research Scholar category may apply instead. Your designated sponsor makes the final determination based on your background and the host employer's training plan.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a Pricing Actuary?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your hiring employer. Organizations like Cultural Vistas or AIPT issue the DS-2019 form, review your DS-7002 training plan, and monitor your program compliance throughout your stay. Your host employer, the insurance carrier or consulting firm where you work, is the placement site, not the legal sponsor under State Department rules.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 Pricing Actuary?
Many smaller insurance carriers and regional reinsurers host J-1 trainees but don't advertise this openly in job postings. Migrate Mate surfaces Pricing Actuary roles from employers with demonstrated experience hosting international professionals, making it easier to identify placement opportunities without cold-contacting hundreds of firms that have no J-1 hosting infrastructure.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to actuarial trainees?
It depends on your funding source and nationality. If your J-1 training is funded by your home government or a U.S. government program, or if your home country has listed actuarial science on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, you'll be subject to the two-year requirement under INA Section 212(e). Your designated sponsor is required to disclose this on your DS-2019 before you enter the United States.
Can a Pricing Actuary on J-1 status sit for SOA or CAS exams while in the U.S.?
Yes. Sitting for Society of Actuaries or Casualty Actuarial Society exams is permissible while on J-1 status because the exams are a professional credentialing activity, not employment outside your authorized host placement. Confirm with your designated sponsor that exam preparation time doesn't conflict with the training objectives outlined in your DS-7002, since significant deviation from the approved plan can trigger compliance concerns.
