Frame your training plan around coordination competencies
Your DS-2019 training plan must map specific Regional Coordinator tasks, such as stakeholder management and multi-site reporting, to measurable learning objectives. Vague plans citing only job duties get flagged by designated sponsors during review.
Distinguish Trainee from Specialist before you apply
If you hold a degree and have under one year of post-graduation experience, the Trainee category fits. If you have significant professional expertise in program coordination without a directly related degree, the Specialist category may be the correct match.
Search for host employers using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Regional Coordinator roles at U.S. organizations that actively work with J-1 exchange visitors. Targeting hosts with prior J-1 experience shortens the DS-2019 issuance timeline and reduces friction during onboarding.
Verify your host employer understands DS-2019 obligations
Before accepting an offer, confirm the host organization is willing to submit required documentation to a designated sponsor such as Cultural Vistas or CIEE. Many employers confuse J-1 hosting obligations with standard HR onboarding and need explicit guidance.
Check for the two-year home residency requirement early
Some J-1 Specialist placements trigger the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e), depending on your country of origin and funding source. Identifying this before accepting an offer prevents complications if you later pursue an H-1B or immigrant visa.
Align your coordination experience with O*NET skill benchmarks
Designated sponsors evaluate whether your background matches the role's technical requirements. Reviewing the O*NET occupation profile for Regional Coordinators lets you identify the specific skills, tasks, and knowledge areas to highlight in your training plan and resume.

Find Regional Coordinator JobsRegional Coordinator J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Regional Coordinator roles?
Most Regional Coordinator placements fall under the Trainee category for candidates with a relevant degree and less than one year of post-graduation experience, or the Specialist category for professionals with substantial expertise in program coordination. The correct category depends on your educational background, years of experience, and the scope of the host organization's program. A designated sponsor makes the final determination when reviewing your DS-2019 application.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a Regional Coordinator?
Your J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. Organizations such as Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or IIE issue your DS-2019, monitor compliance with exchange visitor regulations, and serve as the official sponsor on record. Your hiring organization is the host employer. These are distinct roles, and understanding that distinction helps you ask the right questions during negotiations with any prospective host.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host J-1 Regional Coordinators?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Regional Coordinator positions at organizations that have experience working with J-1 exchange visitors. Targeting hosts already familiar with the DS-2019 process and training plan requirements significantly reduces delays. Nonprofits, international NGOs, government-adjacent agencies, and multisite program operators frequently host J-1 exchange visitors in coordination roles.
Does a Regional Coordinator position trigger the two-year home residency requirement?
It depends on your country of citizenship, whether your exchange program is government-funded, and whether your home country appears on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List. The two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e) bars you from adjusting to H-1B or immigrant visa status until you fulfill it or obtain a waiver. Clarify this with your designated sponsor before signing an offer letter.
What should a J-1 training plan include for a Regional Coordinator role?
Your training plan must detail the specific skills you will develop, the methods used to transfer those skills, the timeline and phases of your placement, and how your supervisor will evaluate progress. For Regional Coordinator roles, this typically means documenting training in stakeholder engagement, program reporting systems, cross-regional logistics, and team coordination. Generic descriptions of job duties are not sufficient. Designated sponsors require measurable learning objectives tied to each phase of the placement.
