Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Research Manager
Align your CV to Research Scholar criteria
The J-1 Research Scholar category requires a graduate-level background and a clear research agenda. Tailor your CV to emphasize publications, grants managed, and lab or program oversight experience before approaching any host institution.
Check for the two-year home residency requirement
If your home country or field appears on the DOS Exchange Visitor Skills List, you may be subject to a two-year home residency requirement before changing to H-1B or green card status. Confirm your eligibility with the host institution before accepting an offer.
Search Migrate Mate for J-1-aligned research roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. research and program management positions at employers that have hosted J-1 exchange visitors. This narrows your search to organizations already familiar with the DS-2019 process and host-institution obligations.
Negotiate DS-2019 issuance before signing anything
Your host employer cannot issue the DS-2019 themselves. Confirm which designated sponsor organization they work with, and verify that the sponsor will issue the DS-2019 under the Research Scholar or Specialist category before you sign an offer letter.
Secure an institutional affiliation letter early
Most designated sponsors require a formal affiliation letter from the host institution describing your research objectives, program duration, and funding source. Drafting this letter takes longer than applicants expect, so initiate it as soon as the offer is verbal.
Verify the host's SEVIS compliance history
Ask the host institution's international office whether they have an active relationship with a SEVIS-registered designated sponsor. Hosts without an existing sponsor relationship add weeks to your start timeline while they establish one.

Find Research Manager JobsResearch Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Research Manager role?
Research Manager positions most commonly fall under the J-1 Research Scholar or Specialist category. Research Scholar applies when you're conducting independent research at a university or institute. Specialist applies when your role involves specialized skills in a defined program area rather than original research. The Intern or Trainee categories are not appropriate for experienced Research Manager candidates.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a Research Manager?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. The hiring institution is your host, and it works with a designated sponsor such as IIE or Cultural Vistas to issue your DS-2019 form. Your employer cannot sponsor the J-1 directly. This is fundamentally different from employer-sponsored visas like H-1B, where the hiring company files the petition.
How do I find U.S. employers that support J-1 Research Scholar placements?
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. research institutions, universities, and nonprofits that have hosted J-1 exchange visitors in research and program management roles. Searching this way surfaces employers already familiar with the DS-2019 process, which shortens your onboarding timeline considerably compared to approaching organizations with no prior J-1 experience.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to Research Managers?
It depends on your home country and field. If your nationality or discipline appears on the DOS Exchange Visitor Skills List, or if your exchange program was funded by a U.S. or home-country government agency, the two-year home residency requirement applies. This means you'd need to return home or obtain a waiver before switching to H-1B or applying for a green card.
Can a Research Manager extend their J-1 status or change to another visa?
J-1 Research Scholar status can typically be extended through the designated sponsor organization if the host institution can justify continued research objectives. Extensions require an updated DS-2019 and must be approved before your current program end date. If you're subject to the two-year home residency requirement, a change of status to H-1B or permanent residence requires either fulfilling the requirement or obtaining a waiver first.
