Aledade, a public benefit corporation, exists to empower the most transformational part of our health care landscape - independent primary care. Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Security Engineering Manager
Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
Security engineering leadership roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, cybersecurity, or electrical engineering. Gather transcripts, credential evaluations, and professional certifications like CISSP or CISM before approaching any designated sponsor.
Target host employers with active security programs
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers actively hosting J-1 exchange visitors in security and engineering management roles, so you approach organizations already familiar with the DS-2019 and training plan requirements.
Distinguish the Trainee category from Research Scholar
If you have under five years of post-degree professional experience, the J-1 Trainee category fits best. Research Scholar applies if your role centers on supervised research at a university or research institution rather than industry-side security operations management.
Build a training plan that reflects managerial scope
Your designated sponsor requires a detailed Training Plan (Form DS-7002) before issuing your DS-2019. Document rotations across threat modeling, incident response oversight, and team leadership to demonstrate the program's training value beyond standard employment.
Verify whether your country triggers the two-year rule
Security engineering professionals from countries on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, or those funded by their home government, face a two-year home-residency requirement before switching to H-1B or green card status. Confirm your country's status with USCIS before accepting any host offer.
Confirm your host employer's E-Verify enrollment early
Many designated sponsors require the host employer to be enrolled in E-Verify before countersigning a training plan. Ask the employer's HR team to confirm enrollment status before your sponsor begins processing, or risk delays late in the filing process.

Find Security Engineering Manager JobsSecurity Engineering Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Security Engineering Manager roles?
Most Security Engineering Manager candidates fall under the J-1 Trainee category if they have fewer than five years of post-degree professional experience, or the Specialist category for highly experienced practitioners brought in for a narrowly defined objective. Research Scholar applies only if the role is housed at a university or formal research institution with a structured research agenda.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for this role, the employer or a separate organization?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT, not the hiring employer. The employer acts as the host organization, providing the work environment and signing the training plan. The designated sponsor issues the DS-2019, monitors compliance, and carries legal responsibility for the exchange program.
How can I find U.S. employers willing to host a J-1 Security Engineering Manager?
Use Migrate Mate to search for U.S. employers and roles specifically aligned with J-1 sponsorship in engineering and security management. Targeting employers who have hosted J-1 exchange visitors before reduces friction because their HR and legal teams already understand the DS-2019 process, training plan requirements, and designated sponsor coordination.
Does the two-year home-residency requirement affect Security Engineering Manager candidates?
It can. If your home country appears on the DOS Exchange Visitor Skills List, or if your exchange program is financed directly or indirectly by your home government or the U.S. government, the two-year rule applies. This means you cannot change to H-1B status or most immigrant visa categories without first returning home for two years or obtaining a waiver through USCIS.
What does a Training Plan for a Security Engineering Manager typically include?
The DS-7002 Training Plan must outline structured, supervised activities that go beyond routine job duties. For a Security Engineering Manager, this typically covers rotations in areas like vulnerability management, security architecture review, incident command, and cross-functional team leadership. Your designated sponsor reviews the plan for educational merit before countersigning and issuing the DS-2019.
