Document your advising credentials before applying
Gather transcripts, professional certifications, and reference letters that demonstrate your academic advising or student support background. Designated sponsors require these to verify your qualifications when preparing your DS-2019 application.
Target host employers with established J-1 histories
Universities, community colleges, and education nonprofits with existing exchange visitor programs move faster through the DS-2019 process. Search Migrate Mate to filter Student Success Coordinator openings by employers already familiar with J-1 hosting requirements.
Clarify your program category before outreach
If you're a current student, the Intern category applies. If you've completed your degree and have relevant work experience, the Specialist or Trainee category is more likely. Misidentifying your category upfront can delay DS-2019 issuance significantly.
Confirm the host employer will sign your training plan
Your designated sponsor requires a signed training or program plan from the host institution before issuing the DS-2019. Ask the hiring manager early whether their HR team has handled this documentation before, since first-time hosts often underestimate the lead time.
Ask about the two-year home residency requirement
Some J-1 participants, particularly those funded by their home government or whose home country has a skills shortage designation, must return home for two years after the program. Confirm with your designated sponsor whether your situation triggers this requirement before accepting an offer.
Allow extra lead time for government-funded institutions
Public universities and government-affiliated education organizations often have longer internal approval cycles before they can formally engage a designated sponsor. Build at least six to eight weeks of buffer between your offer and your intended start date.

Find Student Success Coordinator JobsStudent Success Coordinator J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Student Success Coordinator roles?
It depends on your career stage. Current students completing a practical component of their degree typically fall under the Intern category. Professionals who have finished their degree and have relevant experience in academic advising or student affairs generally qualify under the Specialist category. Your designated sponsor, not the host employer, makes the final determination when issuing your DS-2019.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for this role?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or IIE, not the university or nonprofit hiring you. The hiring institution is your host employer. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019 form, monitors your program compliance, and serves as the official point of contact with the State Department throughout your exchange.
How do I find Student Success Coordinator positions where the host employer already understands J-1 requirements?
Many employers have hosted J-1 exchange visitors before, but they don't always advertise that in job postings. Migrate Mate surfaces Student Success Coordinator roles at institutions with documented J-1 hosting history, so you can prioritize outreach to employers who won't need to start the process from scratch when you bring up sponsorship.
Does my Student Success Coordinator role need to be full-time to qualify for J-1 status?
J-1 program categories like Specialist and Trainee generally require the role to be substantive and structured, with a clear training or program objective. Part-time arrangements complicate DS-2019 issuance because designated sponsors need to demonstrate you're gaining meaningful professional experience aligned with your field. Most successful applicants are placed in full-time or near-full-time host positions.
Can I extend my J-1 status if my host employer wants to keep me on longer?
Extensions are possible but must be approved by your designated sponsor before your current DS-2019 expires, and the total program length cannot exceed the category maximum. The Specialist category caps at one year, though extensions may be available in some circumstances. Your designated sponsor handles the extension request, not USCIS, and your host employer must provide documentation supporting the continued program need.
