Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an Information Security Intern
Align your degree to the role
Your J-1 Intern program requires a direct field-of-study match. A cybersecurity, computer science, or information systems enrollment document strengthens your DS-2019 application and signals to host employers that your training plan is approvable.
Target hosts with active security teams
Host employers running internal security operations centers, conducting penetration testing, or holding FedRAMP authorizations are more likely to structure a compliant 32-week training plan than generalist IT shops without dedicated security functions.
Search J-1 friendly roles on Migrate Mate
Filter by information security and internship-level roles on Migrate Mate to surface host employers already familiar with J-1 program requirements, so you spend less time educating recruiters about DS-2019 and training plan documentation.
Clarify the two-year home residency rule early
Some J-1 participants from countries with government-funded exchanges or critical skills designations face a two-year home residency requirement after their program ends, which affects H-1B or green card eligibility. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
Get the training plan approved before onboarding
Your designated sponsor must countersign a detailed training plan outlining specific cybersecurity competencies, supervision methods, and evaluation milestones before you start. Gaps in that document are the most common reason DS-2019 issuance is delayed after an offer is extended.
Verify the host employer's legal work authorization
Confirm your host employer is registered with E-Verify, especially if the internship involves access to federal systems or government contracts. E-Verify participation is required for federal contractors and reduces administrative friction during onboarding.

Find Information Security Intern JobsInformation Security Intern J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers an information security internship?
Current students enrolled at a degree-granting institution use the Intern category, which supports hands-on training directly related to your field of study. Recent graduates within 12 months of completing a cybersecurity or computer science degree may qualify for the Trainee category instead, which has a longer maximum duration and slightly different training plan requirements.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for an information security internship?
Your visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the company where you work. Organizations like Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or AIPT issue your DS-2019 form and monitor program compliance throughout your internship. The hiring company is your host employer and provides the training environment, but it does not sponsor the visa directly.
How do I find host employers open to J-1 information security interns?
Search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces U.S. employers and roles aligned with J-1 sponsorship requirements for information security positions. Because J-1 intern hosting requires the employer to commit to a structured training plan and accept oversight from a designated sponsor, targeting companies with established intern programs or government contractor backgrounds improves your chances significantly.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to information security interns?
It depends on your home country's skills shortage list and whether any government funding supported your exchange. Participants from certain countries, or those whose home governments partly financed their program, are subject to the requirement, which bars direct status changes to H-1B or green card without a waiver. Your designated sponsor can clarify whether your situation triggers it before you sign an offer.
What does the training plan need to cover for a cybersecurity internship?
The training plan, required by your designated sponsor, must outline specific learning objectives tied to information security, such as network monitoring, vulnerability assessment, or incident response. It should specify supervision methods, evaluation schedules, and how each phase connects to your academic background. Vague or generic IT descriptions are frequently rejected, so work with your host employer to document actual cybersecurity tasks rather than broad technology duties.
