INTRODUCTION
For over 20 years, Smartsheet has helped people and teams achieve–well, anything. From seamless work management to smart, scalable solutions, we’ve always worked with flow. We’re building tools that empower teams to automate the manual, uncover insights, and scale smarter. But more than that, we’re creating space– space to think big, take action, and unlock the kind of work that truly matters. Because when challenge meets purpose, and passion turns into progress, that’s magic at work, and it’s what we show up for every day.
Smartsheet is seeking a Sr. Technical Support Operations Manager to focus on the operational architecture required to balance efficiency with a high-quality customer experience. You will be responsible for the tools and logic that dictate how we staff our teams, how we measure quality, and how we route technical issues. Your goal is to move the support organization toward a predictive, data-driven model that integrates technical signals into the broader customer retention strategy.
YOU WILL
- Lead Strategic Roadmap Planning: Partner with the Technical Support senior leadership team to drive the development of quarterly roadmaps and prioritization planning for the technical support organization.
- Optimize Support Delivery Process: Own the technical lifecycle of the global support stack, including oversight of Workforce Management and Quality Assurance tools. You will lead the design of scoring rubrics and staffing logic to maintain service level targets across global time zones.
- Drive Demand and Capacity Planning: Build the support capacity models used for long-term headcount planning. You will use historical volume data and growth projections to predict future support demand and determine the optimal staffing requirements to meet business needs.
- Manage Routing and Tiering Logic: Manage the technical rules, definitions, and workflows that dictate how cases are segmented and routed. You will ensure that technical issues reach the correct internal tiers immediately to minimize resolution time and customer effort.
- Operationalize Support-to-Success Handoffs: Design and manage the workflows that pass account risks, expansion opportunities or training gaps identified in support tickets to the appropriate Sales or Customer Success teams. You will ensure these handoffs are automated and trackable.
- Automate Premium Entitlements: Manage the technical integration of appointment scheduling systems for premium offerings. You will define the logic that verifies a customer’s entitlement in Salesforce before allowing access to specialized support sessions.
- Establish Product Feedback Loops: Partner with Product and Engineering to formalize the process for surfacing the voice of the customer sentiment, technical friction points and common product issues. You will provide the data-driven insights needed to influence the product roadmap and reduce support volume at the source.
YOU HAVE
- 7+ years of experience in Technical Support Operations, Revenue Operations, or Business Operations in a SaaS environment.
- Systems Expertise: Proficiency with Salesforce Service Cloud and integrated operational tools such as WFM and QA platforms.
- Analytical Proficiency: Strong capability in capacity modeling and volume forecasting, with the ability to translate data into actionable staffing plans.
- Operational Discipline: A track record of formalizing messy processes into documented, repeatable workflows that scale globally.
- Collaboration Skills: Experience partnering with Support VPs and Directors to build systems that meet aggressive service level targets without increasing operational friction.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Technical Operations Manager
Frame your training plan around operations gaps
J-1 Trainee and Specialist applications require a structured training plan. Document specific operational skills you'll develop in the U.S. that aren't available in your home country. Vague plans get rejected; concrete skill timelines get approved.
Verify your program category before applying
If you're a current student or recent graduate, the Intern category applies. If you've held professional operations experience for over one year post-degree, the Trainee category fits. Applying under the wrong category delays DS-2019 issuance significantly.
Target host employers with existing sponsor relationships
Use Migrate Mate to find Technical Operations Manager roles at U.S. companies already familiar with J-1 hosting requirements. Employers who've hosted before understand training plan obligations and move faster through the designation process.
Confirm whether the role carries a home residency requirement
Technical Operations Manager positions funded by a foreign government or involving specialized skills may trigger the two-year home residency requirement. Confirm this before accepting an offer, as it affects future H-1B or green card eligibility.
Align your job title to O*NET classifications
Designated sponsors cross-reference your proposed role against O*NET occupation profiles during DS-2019 review. Make sure your offer letter job title and duties match a recognized operations management classification to avoid program category disputes.
Request a wage compliance confirmation from your host employer
Your host employer must pay J-1 trainees and specialists the prevailing wage for the role and location. Before signing an offer, ask them to run the OFLC Wage Search and confirm your offered compensation meets the requirement.

Find Technical Operations Manager JobsTechnical Operations Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Technical Operations Manager roles?
Most Technical Operations Manager candidates qualify under the Trainee category if they have a relevant degree plus at least one year of post-degree work experience, or under the Specialist category for highly experienced professionals with specialized operational expertise. Current students in a degree program use the Intern category instead. The designated sponsor organization confirms which category fits your background before issuing your DS-2019.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for this type of role?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. Organizations like Cultural Vistas or AIPT issue the DS-2019 form and monitor program compliance. The company hiring you is the host employer. You must secure both a willing host employer and an approved designated sponsor to proceed. Your employer's cooperation is required to complete the training plan, but they don't hold sponsor authority.
How do I find U.S. companies open to hosting a J-1 Technical Operations Manager?
Search Migrate Mate to identify Technical Operations Manager openings at U.S. employers familiar with J-1 hosting. Companies that have hosted exchange visitors before understand the DS-2019 process, training plan requirements, and SEVIS reporting obligations, which reduces delays on your end. Targeting employers with prior J-1 experience is more efficient than educating a new host from scratch.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to operations management positions?
It depends on your funding source and nationality. If your J-1 program is funded by your home-country government or the U.S. government, or if your home country lists your skills as scarce, the two-year requirement likely applies. This matters significantly if you later want to pursue an H-1B or employer-sponsored green card. Confirm your requirement status with the designated sponsor before you commit to a host employer.
What does the J-1 training plan requirement mean for operations roles specifically?
Every J-1 Trainee and Specialist application requires a detailed training plan outlining the skills you'll develop, the methods of instruction, and a phase-by-phase timeline. For Technical Operations Manager roles, this means documenting specific operational methodologies, systems, or process improvement frameworks you'll learn in the U.S. that aren't available at home. Generic plans describing general management exposure are routinely challenged by designated sponsors.
