Document your underwriting credentials precisely
Compile degree transcripts, professional certifications like CPCU or ARe, and employment verification letters that show progressive underwriting responsibility. Designated sponsors evaluate whether your background meets the J-1 Trainee or Specialist category's field-specific eligibility requirements before issuing a DS-2019.
Target insurance carriers with international training programs
Focus your search on mid-to-large carriers, reinsurers, and Lloyd's syndicates that already operate global talent programs. Employers familiar with hosting J-1 participants understand the training plan obligation and are less likely to withdraw offers when sponsor paperwork begins.
Search J-1-aligned roles using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter underwriting and insurance management roles posted by U.S. employers open to international professionals. Searching by role and sponsorship compatibility narrows your list before you invest time in applications.
Verify your home-country residency requirement early
Some J-1 Trainee and Specialist participants are subject to a two-year home-country physical presence requirement after their program ends, particularly if funded by a government or if your home country is on the Exchange Visitor Skills List. Confirm your status before accepting an offer that assumes H-1B conversion.
Align the training plan with underwriting management tasks
Your designated sponsor and host employer must complete a structured training plan detailing the specific skills you will develop. Map your plan to identifiable underwriting functions, such as portfolio analysis, risk selection, or treaty negotiation, rather than general management duties, to satisfy sponsor review.
Confirm host employer willingness before sponsor enrollment
Ask the hiring manager directly whether their legal or HR team has hosted J-1 participants before and whether they will sign the required host employer agreement. Sponsors like Cultural Vistas and AIPT require host organization signatures before processing your DS-2019.

Find Underwriting Manager JobsUnderwriting Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an Underwriting Manager role?
The J-1 Trainee category applies if you have a degree in finance, business, or a related field plus at least one year of relevant experience, or if you have five or more years of underwriting work experience without a degree. The Specialist category applies to established professionals with expertise in a narrowly defined underwriting discipline. Neither category is designed for on-the-job career transitions.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for this type of role?
A U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization, such as Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or IIE, issues your DS-2019 and acts as the legal J-1 sponsor. The insurance carrier or financial institution that hires you is the host employer, not the visa sponsor. The host must sign a training agreement with the designated sponsor but does not file the visa paperwork directly.
Can I use Migrate Mate to find underwriting roles open to J-1 participants?
Yes. Migrate Mate lets you search U.S. underwriting and insurance management positions filtered by employers that are open to international professionals. Because many underwriting roles do not advertise J-1 compatibility explicitly, using a targeted search tool helps you identify host organizations before investing time in applications that may not move forward.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect underwriting professionals?
It can. If your home country appears on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List in insurance or finance occupations, or if your J-1 program was government-funded, you may be required to return home for two years before applying for H-1B or permanent residence. Clarify your country's skills list status and your funding source with your designated sponsor before signing an offer.
What does the training plan need to include for an underwriting management position?
The training plan must describe specific, measurable skills you will acquire that go beyond routine job duties. For underwriting management, this typically includes structured exposure to risk assessment methodologies, underwriting guidelines development, portfolio review processes, and cross-functional work with actuarial or claims teams. Generic descriptions like 'gain management experience' are routinely rejected by designated sponsors.
