Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in VP Of Product
Align your DS-2019 to product disciplines
Your training plan must map your VP-level product work to a recognized occupational category. Frame objectives around product strategy, roadmap development, and cross-functional leadership so the designated sponsor can justify your DS-2019 under the Trainee or Specialist category.
Target host organizations with formal exchange programs
Companies that have hosted J-1 exchange visitors before already understand the DS-2019 process and training plan requirements. Prioritize product leadership roles at organizations with documented history of hosting international professionals through designated sponsors like Cultural Vistas or AIPT.
Search VP-level roles using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. employer listings by roles compatible with J-1 sponsorship at the VP of Product level. It surfaces host organizations actively seeking senior product professionals, saving you from manually vetting employers unfamiliar with exchange visitor requirements.
Clarify the two-year home residency rule early
If your home country or your J-1 funding source triggers the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e), disclose this to host employers before an offer stage. It affects any future H-1B or green card transition and should shape your visa strategy from the start.
Negotiate a structured training plan before signing
The DS-7002 training plan is a legal document, not a formality. Before accepting an offer, confirm with your host employer that the plan reflects real VP-level activities, measurable objectives, and a defined timeline. Vague plans invite scrutiny from your designated sponsor and DOS.
Confirm host employer eligibility with your designated sponsor
Not every company qualifies as a J-1 host organization. Before finalizing any offer, have your designated sponsor verify the employer meets DOS requirements for size, compliance history, and capacity to support a senior exchange visitor in a VP of Product function.

Find VP Of Product JobsVP Of Product J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a VP of Product role?
Most VP of Product candidates qualify under the Trainee or Specialist category. The Trainee category suits those who graduated within the past 12 months or have fewer than five years of professional experience in product management. The Specialist category applies to established product leaders with specialized expertise. A designated sponsor like Cultural Vistas or AIPT issues your DS-2019 under whichever category fits your profile.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for a VP of Product position?
Your visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. The host company provides the job and funds your exchange, but a designated sponsor such as Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or IIE issues the DS-2019 form, administers your program, and monitors regulatory compliance. Conflating the host employer with the visa sponsor is one of the most common misconceptions for senior-level J-1 applicants.
How do I find U.S. companies open to hosting a J-1 VP of Product?
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers listing VP of Product roles that align with J-1 sponsorship. Not every company has hosted a J-1 exchange visitor before, so targeting organizations already familiar with the DS-2019 process significantly reduces friction during the offer stage. Searching by role and sponsorship compatibility at the same time is more efficient than applying broadly and screening afterward.
Can a VP of Product on a J-1 visa transition to an H-1B later?
Yes, but the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e) can block that transition if it applies to you. Whether it triggers depends on your home country's designation and whether your J-1 program received U.S. government funding. If the requirement applies, you need either a waiver or to complete the two-year residency abroad before filing an H-1B or adjusting status.
What does the training plan need to cover for a senior product role?
Your DS-7002 training plan must document specific learning objectives tied to VP-level product work, including product strategy, team leadership, and market analysis activities. Generic descriptions like 'observing product operations' are insufficient for a senior designation. The host employer and designated sponsor both sign off on the plan, and DOS may review it, so every phase should reflect genuine knowledge exchange rather than standard employment duties.
