Summary:
The Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s Urban Affairs and New Nontraditional Programs is seeking an Urban Regional Extension Agent (UREA) in Tuscaloosa County (also serving Jefferson County) to identify, assess, prioritize needs, and provide learning opportunities to urban, new and nontraditional audiences with a focus on the 4-H and Youth Development program area. The UREA will work as part of a program team under the direction of an Extension Specialist providing leadership and content of the offered programs. The program team supports the UREA to deliver quality programs for underserved and underrepresented communities and individuals.
Location: Tuscaloosa County, Tuscaloosa, AL, also serving Jefferson County
Examples of Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- The Urban Regional Extension Agent (UREA) will serve as a member of 4-H and youth development program team and projects to provide educational outreach to the assigned metropolitan statistical area.
- This position is with the 4-H and Youth Development program area with an emphasis on Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Agriculture, and Mathematics (STREAM) content.
- The UREA plans, develops, implements, evaluates, reports and revises experientially based youth development programs to focus on urban youth audiences, new and underserved youth groups, youth organizations and diverse youth populations.
- The UREA will support program planning, implementation and evaluation within the assigned county under leadership of an Extension Specialist.
- The UREA works through the 4-H and Urban Youth Development Specialist, using innovative, nontraditional approaches to provide outreach support for urban youth programs that focus on leadership, service, physical and personal development to help advance youths’ potential to become physically and emotionally healthy, self-directing, productive and contributing members of society.
- The selected individual will market the educational programs and activities using public service announcements, social media, news articles, fact sheets, brochures, flyers, and other innovative marketing tools.
- The UREA pursues professional development and participates in required certification programs to advance his/her knowledge and expertise.
- The UREA recruits volunteers and uses input from program advisory committees, community leadership and other community assessments to support program directions. The agent seeks partnerships, sponsors and funding support through grants, contracts and program agreements with relevant agencies, organizations and youth service leaders.
- The UREA conducts appropriate and required evaluations, analyzes and interprets program impacts and provides required impact reports through System reporting procedures.
- The UREA seeks funding support through grants, contracts, and program agreements with relevant agencies and organizations.
- The UREA will be responsible for conducting surveys to collect impact data, measure effectiveness, and report accomplishments.
- The UREA evaluates, analyzes, and interprets program data to complete required organization reports and show program impact.
Typical Qualifications
Minimum Position Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree in Elementary or Early Childhood Education, Collaborative Education, Secondary Science Education, or other related discipline. Degree may be in different areas, but candidate must provide a broad understanding of Youth Development.
- Minimum 3 years of formal or informal teaching experience in a relevant discipline.
- Applicant must have exceptional written and oral communication, and organizational skills and the ability to deliver educational programming and resources to a diverse clientele.
- Ability to travel (use of personal vehicle with mileage reimbursement) and work flexible hours that can include nights and weekends is required to fulfill assigned responsibilities.
Preferred Requirements:
- Master’s degree in relevant discipline preferred. Graduate level courses and specialized certifications in related fields preferred. The successful incumbent will be required to obtain a master’s degree within five years of successfully completing a probationary period.
- Intermediate to Advanced experience with Microsoft Office suite.

- Applicant must have a demonstrated interest and enthusiasm for working with urban, new and nontraditional audiences to deliver new and innovative programs.
- Requires use of Computer applications, programs, social media, and other communications methods.
- Ability to collect, analyze, and report impact data for reports, and to appropriate stakeholders.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision in various settings while implementing and evaluating impact driven programming with an understanding of sociological impacts, and exhibit leadership and people skills.
- Must be able to work effectively as a member of a team, work with diverse groups, be self-motivated, and manage time and resources.
