Machine Learning Intern Jobs in Pittsburgh: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a machine learning intern job in Pittsburgh?
Target Pittsburgh's densest hiring pockets: Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh generate a thick ecosystem of research labs and spinouts in Oakland that hire interns directly. The Strip District and Hazelwood Green host robotics and autonomous-vehicle firms that recruit heavily for ML roles. A portfolio of personal projects, familiarity with PyTorch or TensorFlow, and a connection to CMU's or Pitt's career networks give candidates a concrete edge in this market.
Which companies hire machine learning interns in Pittsburgh?
Companies currently hiring machine learning interns in Pittsburgh include Carnegie Mellon University, Stack AV, and Gather AI, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Pittsburgh's employer mix skews toward research-driven technology firms, robotics companies, and major health systems with active AI divisions.
Are there remote machine learning intern jobs in Pittsburgh?
Yes, though many roles tied to Pittsburgh's robotics and lab-based research require on-site access to hardware and data infrastructure. About 32% of machine learning intern openings tied to Pittsburgh are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with remote work most common in data-focused and software-side ML tasks. Model training, data pipeline work, and analytics projects tend to be the most location-flexible portions of the role.
How can I get a machine learning intern job in Pittsburgh with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Pittsburgh is through university-affiliated research labs, particularly at Carnegie Mellon or Pitt, where faculty-supervised internships are open to students with strong coursework but limited professional experience. Local startups in the Strip District and Hazelwood Green often hire early-career candidates willing to take on broad responsibilities. Building a public GitHub portfolio with a completed ML project and attending Pittsburgh-area AI meetups accelerates visibility with hiring managers at smaller firms.
Which industries hire the most machine learning interns in Pittsburgh?
