Mammographer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mammographer in California?
To work as a mammographer in California, you must hold a Radiologic Technology certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health, which requires completing an accredited radiologic technology program and passing the ARRT examination. From there, you add the ARRT mammography advanced certification by completing supervised clinical hours in mammography and passing the specialty exam. California's certification is separate from ARRT credentials and is enforced by the CDPH Radiologic Health Branch.
How much do mammographers make in California?
Mammographers in California earn a median of about $121,260 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $70,210 for the lowest 10% to over $165,460 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire mammographers in California?
Employers hiring mammographers in California right now include Sutter Health, CommonSpirit Health, and Sharp HealthCare, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's density of large integrated health systems and independent breast imaging centers means openings appear consistently rather than in seasonal spikes.
Which California cities have the most mammographer jobs?
Crescent City, Redwood City, and San Diego have the most mammographer openings in California. Los Angeles dominates due to the sheer scale of its hospital networks and outpatient imaging infrastructure, while San Francisco and San Diego draw demand from major academic medical centers and large regional health systems that run dedicated breast health programs.
Are there remote mammographer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of mammographer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of performing and positioning for mammography exams. The portions of the role most suited to remote work are image reading support and quality assurance review, which are typically reserved for radiologists rather than mammography technologists.
How can I get hired as a mammographer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to general radiologic technologist positions at large California health systems such as Kaiser Permanente or Dignity Health, which run structured onboarding programs where technologists rotate through modalities including mammography. Completing even limited supervised mammography hours during your accredited radiologic technology program gives a strong edge. Seeking out mobile mammography units or community health clinics in California is another practical route, as these programs often train motivated radiologic technologists directly in breast imaging.
Where can I find and apply to mammographer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to mammographer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Find the roles that fit your credentials and location and apply directly from the listing.
