Clinical Assistant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a clinical assistant in California?
California does not require a state-issued license for medical or clinical assistants, but most employers require completion of an accredited training program and a nationally recognized certification such as the Certified Medical Assistant credential from the American Association of Medical Assistants or the Registered Medical Assistant credential from American Medical Technologists. Community colleges throughout California offer accredited programs, and certification exams are available at testing centers statewide.
Which companies hire clinical assistants in California?
Employers hiring clinical assistants in California right now include Stanford Health Care, University of California - San Francisco, and UCLA Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size and concentration of large integrated health systems means consistent openings across urban medical centers, federally qualified health centers, and multi-site specialty practices throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most clinical assistant jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego have the most clinical assistant openings in California. Los Angeles and the Bay Area lead because of their dense populations and the large hospital systems, academic medical centers, and physician group networks anchored there, while San Diego's strong biotech and military health presence also generates consistent clinical support demand.
Are there remote clinical assistant jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Clinical assistant work is primarily hands-on and patient-facing, so most roles require an on-site presence. About 1% of clinical assistant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to focus on care coordination, prior authorization, or telehealth support functions rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a clinical assistant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a California community college medical assistant program, which many students finish in under a year, then applying directly to new-graduate hiring pipelines at large California systems such as Kaiser Permanente or Dignity Health, both of which hire entry-level certified medical assistants regularly. Patient care technician, front-desk medical receptionist, and community health worker roles are common lateral entry points, and holding a current CMA or RMA certification gives candidates a clear edge even without prior clinic experience.
Where can I find and apply to clinical assistant jobs in California?
You can find and apply to clinical assistant jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from employers actively hiring. Find the roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly.
